Customer Reviews of Flood
Best Live CD I Own Talk about funky; the Herb out does himself on this one. Paul Jackson may not be the best bass player in the world, but he sure is the funkiest. The basslines on this album are incredibly original and funky. Herbie turns the fender rhodes electric piano out like .... I only wish I could of been in Japan to hear such magnificent playing. This is definately a must buy for anyone who enjoys jazz fusion at it's best.
HERBIE IS GOD! Five stars is not enough
Having been a huge fan of the albums THRUST and HEADHUNTERS, I was delighted to find out about this live album recorded in Japan in 1975. The playing is absolutely amazing through-out. Paul Jackson has got to be the best funk bassist ever. A few seconds of ACTUAL PROOF, should be enough for you to fall to your knees thanking god for putting such a funky man on earth. The real gem however is the 17+ minute pre-MANCHILD version of HANG UP YOUR HANG UPS. The drumming is tight, and Herbie gives the fender rhodes one of the most incredible work-outs ever. Originally a double vinyl lp, this cd is packed with funky licks.
TOO MUCH FUNK!!!!!!
DO NOT listen to Herbie Hancock's live "Flood" album in one sitting-particularly the closing 20 minute "Hang Up Your Hang Up's" where a tight groove from his "Manchild" album
is drawn out into a heavy.funky freak-out where the drums, horns and even Herbie's key's are each given a wild, dintinct solo space within an extended groove.Another surprize is the the
clavinet-free "Actuall Proof" where the grand piano replaces
the electronic instruments used on the studio version. The opening "Maiden Voyage" offers a similar lead as the Headhunters
come firmly to grips with a smooth post-bop style.Amazingly every number from Hancock's funk period are given slightly more
acoustic, very different musical treatments and that quality is what makes "Flood" a true funk ovedrload!
