Customer Reviews of Flip, Flop & Fly
Flip, Flop & Fly... all you jitterbugs... What a cd, this might very well be the best swing recording to come from the 1970's era. This is a 10 star disc, which features the great blues shouter Big Joe Turner singing with the swinging and swaggering Count Basie & Orchestra!!! The classic title song(a remake of the original) is the version that inspired so many neo-swing bands to do it(Peggy Cone & Her Central Park Stompers and Indigo swing, to name several). This cd is not only great for listening pleasure, but is a jitterbug dancers delight. Every track has an infectious swing beat, that will keep you dancing weather it be lindy, jitterbug, east coast or west coast swing. This is Turner's best "later" period recordings, and it finds Basie's band in great and energetic form, of course Turner as always is in fine blues shoutin' form. An exellent aquisition for any serios blues or swing fan. A must have essential release. Don't pass this gem of a cd up.
Essential jump blues session for anyone with good taste!
This is one of the CLASSIC jump blues sets of all time. Big Joe Turner is in prime form for this exciting and hard driving swing/jump blues set. Not only is this one of the high points of Turner's great career, it also has the Count Basie Orchestra! Both Turner & the Basie congregation are in exellent form. This session has all of Turner's big hits, and they are better than the originals obviously because of Basie jump arrangements. Turner is outstanding throughout. This allstar session is one of the most jumping swing sessions of all time and is essential for swing dancers(lindy hoppers) as well as jazz, swing and blues/jump blues fans. This is a desert island recording, which finds both Basie's band and Turner in particularly excitable and energetic moods.
For Archivists Only
Everything about this looks good--especially the band. How can it be that a live set with Count Basie's band, including Freddie Green (guitar) and Lockjaw Davis (Tenor), could be disappointing?
First of all, the band sounds tired. Recorded in Europe in the early 70's, it just wasn't a good night. Second, the sound quality is terrible. The horns sound like they are on another planet. The first tune sounds like they improvised it on the spot and, perhaps I misheard it (I listened and re-listened), but Joe Turner says over the microphone that they need to get a new drummer! Later, he tells the audience that Basie's finger is broken. If true, it didn't affect his playing, which is as sparse and tasteful as ever. The lack of significant liner notes does not lend a clue as to what was really going on that night. As a curiosity, this recording serves to amuse.
For listening purposes, however, check out "Boss of the Blues" which takes the lp Joe Turner Sings Kansas City Jazz, adds a few selections, and, subsequently, will not leave your listening rotation EVER. Similar band, different result. Maybe it was the seventies.
