Customer Reviews of Flesh & Blood
Beautiful and Thoughtful My enjoyment of this CD grows with each listen. Maddy's voice is appealing and strong, with accompaniment that makes even the traditional songs sound fresh. The highlight for me is the Todd Rundgren song "Honest Work", sung from the point of view of a person who has lost their job and is slipping downward. This song segues into a bagpipe version of a melody from Sibelius'
"Finlandia." The two together are heartbreaking and beautiful.
I was mainly familiar with Maddy Prior from the early Steeleye Span days and the two Silly Sisters CDs with June Tabor. Now that I have heard this and loved it, I am going to go after some more of her more recent material too.
Wonderful! You can't ignore it!
Since discovering Maddy Prior's solo work, I have to say that this is the best recording yet. Her voice comes across strong and clear. And the musical accompaniment is rich, moving, powerful. All the things that a singer like Maddy Prior needs to present her beautiful vocal work without overwhelming it or mucking it up. She is a singer who does not take her work casually and the care and effort result in fine recordings. That does not mean that all the fun has been siphoned off...her work is thought-provoking and natural -- not tiresome, "fuddy-duddy" stuff. Listening to this is a great pleasure...her work is a true thrill!
Distinctive and powerful vocals
Maddy was featured on "Incantations" by Mike Oldfield. This is modern Celtic music, and is done very well. Maddy has a powerful voice, and her songs are very nice. This album lacks a certain fire, however, and as a result is a little slow in places.
