Customer Reviews of Flash
i would buy it. listen people.... the three songs that are on the zz top box set YOU MAKE ME SHAKE, JOE BLUES AND CRIMSON WITCH, are kick a**. one reviwer said he wouldn't recommend 60's psych to zz top fans, well.. i love zz top and 60's psych, and i would buy this album. another reviwer mr. sandstrom says this album was poorly executed and has a heavy hendrix fixation. look.. as much as i love hendrix, he's NOT the only guitar player that has ever walked this earth AND, mr. gibbons has not changed his style of playing since this time till now. the point bein'.. everybody borrows from somebody.. even hendrix for as great as he was. nuff said.
Exceeds Expectations
In 1968, this was Billy Gibbons at his best; which is
fantastic. If you already own the "Chrome Smoke & Barbecue"
box set, which has 3 Moving Sidewalk selections, you may be
hesitant to get this CD...but I'd advise you to get it, because
there are SEVERAL other excellent tracks, especially Flashback,
No Good To Cry, Pluto, I Want To Hold Your Hand (!) 99th Floor, and others. The few tracks where Mr. Gibbons is not the main
performer aren't so hot...but you can simply program them out.
Also, there is no reason to criticize Billy for his out-and-out
Hendrix influences here (at one point he even says, "Are you
experienced?") Listen----Billy Gibbons had every right
in the world to groove off Jimi...after all, there were touring
partners and roommates on the road.
I thought it was under-rated
One thing the other reviewers failed to mention was this album contains some very classy acoustic guitar work on Gibbons behalf on 'You don't know the life' and the second half of 'Flashback' Other than that, the album has some good jams, like the one at the end of 'Backdoor love affair', It features some fine guitar solo's, especially on the long number 'Joe Blues' and it's a fun, energetic album and it's bluesy, even if it is psychedelic, [hope I spelt that right!], it is bluesy. That's pretty much what you'd want from a ZZ Top album. Oh well, the songwriting could have been better at times but lets not forget two mezmerizing slow blues/ballads supported by Tom Moore's organ, 'You don't know the life' and 'No good to cry'. Of the other songs, 'Flashback', '99th floor', 'Crimson witch', 'Everynight, a new surprise' were all first class white-psychedelic blues of the 60's. There are other songs, Pluto Sept. 13th and eclipse/reclipse that I thought were forgetable. The rest of them were at least fun.
