Customer Reviews of Fireboy
Great tunes and a fine talent This is his best work, bringing all the warmth and great tunes you always wanted to hear. The more sensitive he gets, the more he is brill for you soul. Only the rocking tunes (not more than 2 ) lack his brilliant outstanding talent. His partner Robert Forster is better in keepin the rough edges. Good buy!!!
More Classy Songs from Former Go-Between
Grant McLennan's second album opens with 'Lighting Fires', released as a single here in the UK (If you could find anyone selling it!) a brilliant first track. Although I don't feel 'Fireboy' is his best album - I would pick 'Horsebreaker Star' - However, at its best it is blindingly good. Listen to the moving ballad 'Fingers' or the haunting 'Riddle in the Rain'. Other favourites are 'Things Will Change', 'Signs of Life' and the rather short 'When I Close My Eyes' - just avoid the odd sounding 'Pawnbroker' and terrible racket 'Whose Side Are You On?' and like all of Grant McLennan's albums, you will be left with a very warm glow. A sadly ignored talent. Highly Recommended.
Another gem from an underrated songwriter!
McClennan turns out another fine album of hook-filled, playfully honest songs. This one is more organic-sounding than his earlier 'Watermark' and spunkier than the later 'Horsebreaker Star'. Missteps are few (skip 'The Pawnbroker') and brilliance is prevalent ('Surround Me' has one of the best hooks of the decade, and 'The Dark Side of Town' and 'When I Close My Eyes' are beautiful and earnest). There's a warmth, melodicism, and blunt wit about McClennan's music that is instantly engaging. Spin this a few times and you'll be out hunting for his other great CD's!
