The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which its based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Clouds former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

Customer Reviews of Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children (Limited Edition Collector's Set)
It brings back memories It was about 9 years ago when Final Fantasy 7 came out, and it is still the best game I have ever played. It was also one of the first games I have ever played so that could be a good reason why. Needless to say I was excited when I heard about this movie, I couldn't wait to see those great characters again. I have to say I was not disappointed but felt rather giddy, like I did 9 years ago as a little kid, when I saw Cloud and Sephiroth together again. Anyone who played through and enjoyed the game will enjoy this movie as well. It continues the story consistent with the attitude of the characters in the game and leaves nothing unexplained in the end. It was the conclusion I have been waiting for all these years ever since I finished the game and desperately wished there could be more.
Final Fantasy VII ~ Advent Children
Not too many spoilers, as any of OMGWTF moments are taken care of pretty quickly, you don't have to worry about this review spoiling the film too much, but if you're still worried about that, read no further, watch the film first.

>I bet those who never even heard about an FFVII movie were surprised when they actually saw this on the shelves, and were either exhilarated or skeptical. But that's not the focus of this review!

>Two weeks after I got it (the special 2-disc set) for Christmas, I finally watched it. I didn't like it at first, but then again, I was watching it in the middle of the afternoon, and on the English voice track, at that. I watched it again, same night, two hours later, using the Japanese voice track and subtitles, and WOOOOW...

<
>Advent Children is a CGI, Final Fantasy VII-themed, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-caliber martial arts action/drama movie.
<
>
<
>I never expected the FF characters to be capable of such martial arts feats, but then again, I'm forgetting their Limit Breaks and backgrounds. Cloud is an Ex-SOLDIER, Tifa is a trained fighter, Barret's a rebel, Red XIII is still partially feral, Yuffie's a ninja, Vincent's an ex-secret agent, and Cid's a rough neck.

<
>There's a good five-or-so real fight scenes. We see them pull some pretty crazy stunts, such as flying or otherwise gliding through the air in some parts, and opponents being hit away, only to skid on the ground or fly through the air for what seems like miles (it looks rather improbable in instances, as some of the hits don't seem that strong, but in other instances, works just right). Then there's all the motorcycle acrobatics, such cyclesaults (somersaulting the motorcycle you're riding), and throwing it at someone with your legs while you were riding it.

<
>There's a good three-four instances in which Cloud should've died right away: 1) Getting shot in the head after an enemy tries a cyclesault (the shot only took of Cloud's goggles and left a scratch), 2 & 3) Being run through with a sword, 4) Being shot in the back. Truly a testament to Cloud's superhuman physique, or the suspense of disbelief employed by most kung-fu movies.

<
>This time around, Cloud has SIX swords, and knows how to wield two at a time! Not only that, but all six of them can connect into one sword, or detach into the separate swords they REALLY are! Best stunt pulled in the movie is definitely when Cloud punks Sephiroth with all six at once. The design of each sword, is of course, awexome, and I think replicas are available on the internet, somewhere. P.S., that weird sling on Cloud's back is actually a set of 4-6 sheathes for each of his interconnecting swords, should he want to be able to pull one out quicker than having to disconnect from the one sword.

>The Turks, at least, Rude and Reno, were made out to be far more comedic than originally; at the least, I never saw Rude as being comedic at all. We get to see Cloud slam the door on Reno, we get to see Rude and Reno thrown for miles, and Rude stumble around in a daze after being thrown, only to get punked on the head with a large street sign, and we get to see them fall off the tarp, when trying to climb up it to rescue someone. All those comedic moments, while left me laughing, saying, "This is so stupid!" or on the other side, "Not right now, guys. Cloud's trying to take care of the villains!" And let's not forget the fireworks they pull, without blowing themselves up.

<
>After that, the only lame thing there is, is how Kadaj somehow transforms into Sephiroth, katana, clothes, and all. Sure, there was that thing with Jenova's head, but, meh.
<
>
<
>Alot of the character cameos were pretty obligatory; they could've told the story with just Cloud, Rufus, the Turks, Tifa, Aeris, and Kadaj/Sephiroth, but you'd probably be asking where the other characters were. Red XIII has only one line during the whole thing, Yuffie has little more than her shouts of "Sexist!" when Cait Sith tells here to shut up, and, why does Cait Sith have an Irish accent?

<
>All in all, the FFVII atmosphere was still there. The same, dark, grey atmosphere is still there. But they still manage to give it a happy, conclusive ending this time around.

<
>Only questions left, is why Kadaj wanted the Geostimga infected children, or how that spring in the church cured them of the Geostigma; what special properties did it have? It could've been Mako, when Cloud was infected by Mako when he fell into the Lifestream.
Newbie? Think about passing...
If you missed playing Final Fantasy VII (like me), pass this movie up. Or think about renting it if you're really curious (also like me). I was confused through the entire movie because of my lack of knowledge. Even so, the storyline was very bland. Instead of being two hours, it could have been cut to one. There were so many battles I felt like I was watching myself play a game instead of watching a "movie".

<
>That said, the animation is extremely beautiful. It was eye-candy, at the very least. Couldn't say it's the best I've seen Square Enix do, but overall it was great.
<
>
<
>Then we move on to the voice-acting. This is where the film takes a real nose-dive. I recognized Sephiroth, Cloud, Tifa, and Reno's voices from another Square Enix game (Kingdom Hearts II, whoo hoo!), but the voice-acting was a poorly done disgrace. The voices didn't even come close to matching the animation! It's a dubbed-over Japanese movie, and it shows horribly.
<
>
<
>I also felt that the music was odd for the movie. It was also really hard to hear the people because it was so loud! Thought this could have used a major improvement...
<
>
<
>Okay, so I had my moment on the soapbox, but despite my ranting, I'm glad I saw it. I'm not a fan of Final Fantasy, but I wanted to check it out and see what everyone was talking about. I rented, I saw, I returned... *shrugs* Overall, I thought it was okay, maybe a little odd, and quite...erm...interesting.
