Showcasing two installments of SquareSoft's wildly popular role-playing game (RPG) series, Final Fantasy Anthology features the U.S. debut of Final Fantasy V, and reintroduces one of the best RPGs of all time, Final Fantasy VI, originally released as Final Fantasy III on the Super Nintendo gaming system.

Both games are straight Super Nintendo conversions, so their 2-D graphics and 16-bit sounds are admittedly subpar by PlayStation standards. However, SquareSoft has added brand-new, beautifully animated movies for both titles, and has given Final Fantasy VI the star treatment it deserves by adding a bonus mode where gamers can access loads of supplementary material, such as artwork and data files on the game's monsters and items. As an extra bonus for hardcore fans, an audio CD featuring music from both games is included, making this quite the collector's package.

While Final Fantasy V is one of weaker entries in the series, Final Fantasy VI alone is totally worth the price of Final Fantasy Anthology. Endearingly melodramatic characters, a genuinely epic story line, and rock-solid gameplay make Final Fantasy VI just as absorbing today as it was when it was Final Fantasy III. --Joe Hon

Customer Reviews of Final Fantasy Anthology Collector's Package

Profound disappointment for both
It was with joy and alacrity that I got this double disc set. I loved FF6, and spent countless hours exploring every corner of it. Playing through this version was just to see what was changed, and I was dismayed to see that very little was different. It certainly seemed harder, and while some of the bugs in the programming (particularly the Sketch glitches) were improved and corrected, I did not find anything to further impress me. In fact, the CG scenes at the beginning and end felt tacked on - like they didn't belong. They also failed to make sense to me. The little things - the galleries and stuff - seemed totally unnecessary and useless. <
>As for FF5, I almost immediately disliked this one. The score is often uninspired (and at times, downright irritating - take the music of Kerwin Town for instance), the plot weak, the characters totally without a personality (except Faris), the dialogue corny, the twists not that shocking. What's more, it doesn't look one bit better than FF4. The random battles are, at times, too many and too challenging. The side quests are without purpose, as are many of the villains, and the plot doesn't seem to hang together well. The opening CG scene has nothing to do with the game, and the ending one is a disappointment, and more than a disappointment. Taken altogether, I was very much disappointed with the set. I feel like I paid for tickets to a great opera and all I got was Tennessee Ernie Ford. <
>If you've never played either one, you will likely have a good time playing these two. Taken individually, they are good games. I love FF6 - always have - but FF5 ticked me off. If you're not expecting anything spectacular, you won't be disappointed. Guess I *was* expecting it!

Load times warrant docking a star
I've loved the Final Fantasy series ever since 1990 when the first one came out for NES. Of course, that same game in Japan had been released in 1987. Anyway, this collector's package of FFV and FFVI for the SNES is a gem. <

>Final Fantasy 5 was never released in the US back in 1992, when it came out for the Super Famicom in Japan. With the advent of the internet and downloading ROMs, FF5 became one of the most sought-after games that hadn't been released in the US. (Japan-only releases were unofficially translated into English with a computer software called 'translation patch.') Well in Anthology package, FF5 is released for the first time in English *officially.* Unfortuntely, I have to agree with some people that with the English translation, the unofficial ROM versions are actually better than this official release! (Example: I like "Lenna" instead of "Reina," and "Kara" instead of "Krile.") <

>The graphics and sound quality of FF5 are comparable to FF4. The music, while very good (LOVE YOU NOBUO UEMATSU!), is not QUITE as memorable as the music from either FF4 or FF6, though the Neo-ExDeath and Gilgamesh themes stick out in my mind at the present moment. The game is the final game in the series to focus on the "four crystals [orbs] of earth, air, water and fire." Like the Japanese FF3 (not FF6, which is the US FF3), the game focuses on the Job/Ability system, in which a character can choose any class (ninja, black mage, etc.) and develop skill levels for that class, and change classes at any time. This makes for incredible replay value. The story is entertaining but once again, not quite as good as FFs 4 or 6. <

>Final Fantasy 6 is one of the most incredible RPGs ever. Some say it's better than FF7, the one that made the series mainstream in the US. The story is so awesome and incredible. The player does indeed get sucked into another world. Or, to be more specific, two incarnations of the same world: First, the World of Balance, and second: the World of Ruin. It's great to play it once again, and the CGI animation movies make the package really worth it. I really like the "For the Lovers" movie that you get to watch once you conquer the game. <

>Unfortunately, the one thing that holds the enjoyment value of both games back are the load times. Even on the PS2 with the "fast" and "smooth" settings, the load times for battles and the menu are a bit of a pain, especially given that the gameplay is absolutely identical to the SNES version in terms of graphics, etc. If you're old enough to remember playing the cartridge, which had no load times at all (no 3-5 seconds of black screen while the menu loads), you're going to yearn for that. Of course, one can achieve this by downloading the ROM. Actually the real problem is with FF6, because with FF5, the "fast and smooth" settings do actually make it pretty darn close to the cartridge speed. But for some reason, in FF6 there doesn't seem to be much difference and in particular, the load times in the Coliseum are brutal. <

>All in all though, a great re-release for old-school FF fans!

not bad...
Well.. i had these games a long time ago and wanted them again because i never beat 5 and i really love FF6. <
>Product came within a week even though it sais it might take longer it got here faster then i thought.. so definately faster shipping options are not worth it if you ask me, well, for this kind of purchase anyways. It came in perfect condition though! Was kinda hoping it wouldn't be greatest hits edition, however it and all the other copies i bought of the FF series through amazon were.
