Customer Reviews of Fever
Real pop fever! The former Aussie soap star is back after a 14 year-hiatus. Miss Minogue last charted with a #3 hit Locomotion in 1988 when she was under the stewardship of the famous Stock-Aitken-Waterman. 2 other minor hits followed off her debut and ever since, she had no US success until now. Her 90's album are generally solid with the acclaimed Impossible Princess and Light Years ignored by the US. Light Years returned Minogue to dancefloor prominence afetr the lackluster performance of two prior albums.
There's never a dull moment on Fever besides the global hit Can't Get You Out. It's pure pop fun on Fever cos despite coming from the Stock-Aitken-Waterman home, Kylie ain't ashamed and in fact, each of her songs borrows some elements of that retro-vibe, and reworks them cleverly into songs that are ultra-sleek and stylish. Songs that reverberate in ur head long after the music's gone! Excellent choices are the title track Fever, 2nd single In Your Eyes, Come into My World, Fragile, Love Affair and the wonderful last song Burning Up...
Nearly 3.5 Stars: Kylie Minogue Gives The World ''Fever''
The Aussie pop diva Kylie Minogue returned to the airwaves in 2001 with her smash hit ''Can't Get You Out Of My Head''. The song was an instant hit in Europe, topping the No. 1 spot for 4 weeks straight in The UK. ''Can't Get You Out Of My Head'' put Kylie Minogue back on the American marked, having been absent for numerous years, the Americans embraced her music once again. Despite disappearing from the American charts, Kylie Minogue has always been an Australian and UK favourite. Her 2000's ''Light Years'' gave the Aussie a UK No.1 with 'Spinning Around'' and the singles from the album enjoyed great chart success as well.
2001's ''Fever'' raced up the charts around Europe and Australian as it was released, mainly due to the bouncy, danceable ''Can't Get You Out Of My Head''. If fans were expecting something similar, they weren't disappointed. The album follows the same music style as the lead single.
The album opens with the disco-inspired ''More More More'', which sets the pace for the ''Fever'' album. The fun and energetic song is a bit repetitive at times with its ''More More More'' throughout the song, however it's still quite catchy and enjoyable. A great opener for the album giving the listener the urge to hear ''More More More''. The music is a bit cluttered at times, but the hook is contagious.
My favourite song on ''Fever'' is the boogie romp ''Love At First Sight'' It has a killer beat and is highly enjoyable. Her vocals suit the song perfectly. I love how the pace picks up in the chorus, giving it a climax each time the chorus appears. It was the dance anthem of 2002. It was the third single release in Europe from ''Fever''. It earned Kylie Minogue a top 3 hit in the UK. The video appeared to be quite simple compared to the ''Can't Get You Out Of My Head'' video. I believe the US version was a bit different to the European one. It seems it was more bass-driven. I could be wrong since I have only heard it one or two times. I prefer the original one though the difference isn't that visible anyway.
What can I say about ''Can't Get You Out My Head'', which hasn't already been said. Er nothing. If you haven't heard this song during 2001/2002, surely you must have been living under a rock or having been abducted by aliens. It was the biggest single in Europe in 2001 and among the five best selling singles in the UK in 2001. Its infectious beat and the 'LaLaLa' lyrics proved all it takes to get a hit on your hands is an awesome beat and sing-along lyrics even a 3 year old can enjoy. The offering isn't a favourite of mine, but I can enjoy the song for the great beat.
''Fever'', ''Give It To Me'' and ''Fragile'' are among the weaker offerings on the album. The title track has the silliest lyrics you can imagine. It has quite an annoying beat accompany it. Catchy chorus though. I don't particularly care for the song at all. ''Give In To Me'' has a telephone-like bleeping noise going on. No guessing what Kylie is alluring to. Definitely a filler and one I easily could do without. ''Fragile'' is the 'slowest' song on the album, yet it still has that overall eletro pop sound to it. ''Come Into My World'' is another highlight on the ''Fever'' album. and I believe it won a 2004 Grammy Award for Best Dance Song (?) and deservedly so. Its suggestive lyrics inviting you to ''Come Into Her World'' works extremely well with the breezy, breathy chorus/hook. The vocals suit the song perfectly. The video sees multiples of Kylie Minogue and it was heavily played on various music channels. It was released as the fourth and final single off the album. The trance-inspired track ''In Your Eyes'' was lifted as the second single in Europe. The danceable beat and sultry vocals had everyone dancing.
''Dancefloor'' is an up-beat song, which seemingly is inspired by the disco days. On ode to the good ol' days of boogie. It sound like it could have been on the ''Light Years'' album with its cheesy lyrics. ''Love Affair'' continues the synthesizer-pop sound. ''Your Love'' has light guitar playing throughout the song. It doesn't sound as ''over-produced'' as the rest of the songs on ''Fever''. The plain mid-tempo song is a fresh and bubbly contrast compared to the eletro/dance sound dominating the ''Fever'' album.
The final offering ''Burning Up'' sees Kylie opening the song with sultry vocals. It works really well. Then the beat sets in and that completely ruins the song for my liking. The contrast, between the verses and the choruses, doesn't work and the ''Burning Up'' throughout the song gets annoying after only so long.
Kylie Minogue has never been afraid of taking chances. Her latest album ''Body Language'' is a testament to that. She doesn't seem to take herself all that seriously, which is quite refreshing in a business were everyone tries hard to do exactly that. It's a given that Kylie Minogue doesn't have a powerful voice in any sense of the word, however she uses the little she does have quite well on ''Fever''.
Why only 3 stars you ask? Well the overall sound tends to be a bit repetitive. The single releases are the best songs on the ''Fever''. The rest of the material doesn't have the same potential as the single releases. ''Fever'' is a good dance/pop album and if you enjoy some light pop music ''Fever'' is the album for you. Personally I prefer ''Body Language'' over ''Fever'', but ''Fever'' is highly enjoyable and a guilty pleasure of mine
Overall Rate: 7/10
Minogue is a no-no
I bought this Kylie Minogue CD because I kinda liked her American breakout "I Can't"" and expected a disco/pop album like that of her big single, but didn't really enjoy the record on a whole. No great vocal talent except that of a karaoke queen in my opinion! Britney Spears at least has a distinctive sound. I like her new hit "Slow" from her latest release, but Minogue isn't that great. She's yet another in the industry's actress-to-singer formula, like Jennifer Lopez and Hilary Duff.
