In the action-packed and stylishly directed "Throne for a Loss," a race of mercenary criminals called the Tavleks kidnap the imperious Rygel. "PK Tech Girl" and "That Old Black Magic" feature a peek into the pasts of Rygel and Zhaan as they hide from the fleets of Peacekeeper soldiers in the galactic frontier known as the Uncharted Territories. Leading toward the climax of the show's first season, "Nerve" and "The Hidden Memory" make for a bold two-parter that reunites Crichton with his Peacekeeper Tech girlfriend, Gilina, and introduces the dreaded Scorpius, who uses his Aurora Chair torture device to extract what he mistakenly believes is vital knowledge from Crichton. The final episode, "Family Ties," ends with a cliffhanger guaranteed to bring viewers back for more, as the duplicitous Rygel plans to turn traitor, which eventually leaves the fates of Crichton and D'Argo up for grabs and Moya's young offspring under the control of the conflicted villain Crais, among other developments.

Customer Reviews of Farscape - The Complete Season One
Superb Space Opera from Australia with help from..... I've been enjoying the first season of "Farscape" so far as it airs finally in syndication here in New York City. Without a doubt, this is one of the most compelling science fiction television series I've come across; it is clearly a vast improvement over both "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Enterprise" with respect to the writing and acting. Whether it is really as good as "Babylon 5", the best American science fiction television series which ever aired, remains to be determined. I've greatly enjoyed Ben Browder's John Crichton and Claudia Black as Aeryn Sun. I've also marvelled over the special efforts and the excellent puppetry from Henson Entertainment, which have created for television a science fiction space opera series that is unlike any I have seen. To help cut costs, this television series was filmed in Australia and was a joint Australian, American and British production. Anyone interested in watching a fine science fiction television series can't go wrong by purchasing this CD collection.
Maybe it gets better
I didn't watch this series when it ran on TV, but heard about it first here in Amazon reviews. Since it had so many loyal fans, I decided to give it a try. I'd have to say I was somewhat disappointed - it's not bad, but it's not great either.

>What I liked:
<
>I thought two of the female characters, Zhaan and Aeryn were well done and intriguing. I liked Zhaan best early in the season when she was still a priest and could be counted on for wisdom, morality and a sense of mystery. Later, she became just another character, only blue. Aeryn is tough but vulnerable, always an appealing combination, and the chemistry between her and John works well. Chiana, another female character introduced later in the season, ALMOST works, but they couldn't seem to quite settle on just what kind of character she was supposed to be. Maybe that got worked out in later seasons.

>What I didn't like:
<
>In one word: Crichton. John Crichton is supposed to be a highly intelligent scientist/astronaut. So why does he so often look and act like a dumb jock? To recreate his most characteristic facial expression, do this: Open you mouth slightly. Now, direct your gaze upward and lower your eyelids to half-mast. Get the picture? He looks dumb, or sleepy, or maybe dumb AND sleepy. Since he is the main character, this is a major problem for me.

>Some of the episodes seemed as though different parts were written by different writers, with little communication between them. For example, in one episode, John is sent off on an urgent planetside errand to obtain an emergency medical supply for the ship, which is a biological entity. He ambles around with no apparent sense of urgency, meeting the locals, eating meals with them, etc. Meanwhile, back on the ship, things become desperate and Zhaan has to mind-meld with the ship and share its almost unbearable pain. Seems like one set of writers had a storyline "John shows his sense of wonder at meeting aliens" while another set had "Zhaan shows her priestly powers and empathy" but they forgot the two storylines were supposed to be one story.

>It is not unusual for the first season of series to be a little rough. Writers often need time to see what works, and iron out the details of the characters, relationships, and chemistries. With that in mind, I think the show has possibilities, and maybe the subsequent seasons improved on the first. So far, though, I haven't felt inclined to shell out for season two.
The only season of Farscape worth watching
I was a fan of Farscape when it first started on the Science Fiction channel. The first season had some of the strongest episodes. A great season, and even a few of the second season episodes were good. If only it hadn't degenerated after the first 4 episodes of season 2 from science fiction to science porno. The show actually had a plot in season 1.
