Other ways for developers to utilize the larger memory is by setting a higher frame rate, longer replays, and more animations. Games also can have more sophisticated artificial intelligence, which allows computer-controlled characters to be smarter, literally. Games can offer more characters and vehicles, and contain larger, more complex levels and worlds. Some games like The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask require the Expansion Pak, while others such as Perfect Dark require it for access to all of the game's levels and features. Customer Reviews of Expansion Pak For Nintendo 64
the price is too high! I was having fun with my nintendo 64, but now there are games that recomend you to use the expansion pack(you need an expansion pack to save replays in tony hawk-unless you have ALOT of space free on your memory card, you need it to play on more then 2 players in hydro thunder.) Plus, the price is way too high.(It's not my fault people are starting to make more powerful games then the nintendo 64-or it's cartridges can handle.) Thank goodness the only game that actually requires it is donkey kong 64(which is just like banjo kazooie any way-except with different characters.
A lot of the games that recomend an expansion pack are out for dreamcast (hydro thunder, tony hawk) that don't require an expansion pack. so if you don't have a dreamcast, you may want to buy this. But if you have a dreamcast, don't bother.
Adds a nice touch, but a bit expensive
The expansion pak will definitely enhance many of the newer N64 games (the differences I've seen on Episode I and SuperCross 2000 are very noticeable), but for the extra bit of eye candy I'm not sure this is worth the money. If you really enjoy crisper graphics, then go for it.. but I think some people will find their money better spend elsewhere.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the N64 is becoming dated. The expansion pak will help it a bit, but if you are planning to upgrade to a new system then I would save your money.
Nintendo 64 Ram Expansion
This was a joke created by Nintendo to rake in more cash. They KNEW they where going to use an expansion ram pac, for games, hence the slot in the console itself.
I have not noticed any difference in graphics on non expansion games. Having to have an expansion for certain games like Perfect Dark to get the full use of the cartridge was rather annoying as well. Or haveing to have it to play games period.
Nintendo has made it a polocy that each game system they come out with is so different from the last that none of the previous components worked with the prior. Sadly I am adicted to some games such as Zelda and Final Fantasy, so as much as I dislike the expansion and the non backwards compatability of NES systems I will still purchase them.
Pretty much if you dont need the expansion, dont bother, but if you want to play games like Zelda Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark to the fullest, you will be like me and fork out the cash for the RAM expansion.
And you can use a car or house key to remove the old jumper chip from the front if you are carefull in the process.
