Customer Reviews of Evensong & Vespers at King's
The Glorious Sound of King's The Lonely Planet guidebook to England describes Choral Evensong at King's College as an "extraordinary experience". Sadly, no CD can ever do the "real thing" justice. But this digital recording, made comparatively recently, gives a taste not only of how versatile the choir is, but also of the beauty of sound that it produces.
The first part of the recording is devoted to a service of Vespers. Although this service is not sung frequently at King's in this form (all in Latin), the men of the choir show just how adept they are at singing plainsong.
The second half is taken up with a recording of fairly standard Anglican Evensong fare. The beautifully hushed Nunc Dimittis by Dyson is alone worth the price of the recording.
In short, you have here everything at which this great choir excels: Plainsong, Responses and Preces, a superbly chanted psalm, canticles, an anthem and a hymn.
Anyone who appreciates the English choral tradition should not hesitate to add this bargain to their collection.
