Customer Reviews of Evenflo Simple Effort Metal Gate Taupe
Good Overall, But... Overall, I'm glad we got this gate (2 of them, actually). We love the hands-free operation, the price is exceptionally good, and the taupe color blends in very well with most home decors. But here's some odd features that are not mentioned in the product description: <
> <
>1. There is a long delay between the time you unlock the gate (with the remote control) to the time the gate re-locks itself. We have found that when we walk thru the gate, we are standing there waiting, and waiting, and waiting for the gate to re-lock itself so we can close it behind us. As far as I know, this setting cannot be changed. <
> <
>2. When the gate does re-lock itself, the bolt that shoots out makes an extremely loud "BANG" sound, which wakes our babies up if they are in nearby rooms. <
> <
>3. Other reviewers are correct about one remote control opening both gates at times, or one remote control opening neither gate at times if you own two gates, like we do. The manual says to stick a paper-clip into a little hole in the gates, which does fix the problem, except we are doing the paper-clip trick every couple of weeks it seems. <
> <
>4. Occasionally, the gates will go into "learning mode", all on their own, sometimes in the middle of the night. This means they unlock/lock repeatedly, making the loud "BANG" sound over and over, like 10-15 times, until they have worked out whatever issue they are trying to work out. This is a HUGE problem, not just because it will wake us up at night wondering what all the racket is, but also because our toddler is able to walk thru the gates while they are randomly unlocking and locking. <

>I have contacted EvenFlo about these problems, to which a rep responded, "This is not something that I've heard before," so I may take her suggestion and have the gates replaced. As I mentioned up front, we are happy overall with these gates, as we have also had experience with the regular accordian-style manual gates. Hands-free operation can't be beat!
Check your measurements
Before buying this gate double check all your measurements. Our walls were 37.7 in apart at the top of the gate, so the gate does not latch closed properly. I had to buy those flat plastic circles that you use to stop door knobs from denting the walls. I guess that helps keep it from putting too much pressure on the drywall where it's not supported by studs. Otherwise, the gate would not have locked shut. I wish there were longer extensions for purchase.

>We purchased this gate to keep my beagle puppy from going into our formal living areas and up the stairs to my closet to eat my underwear. This is great because my kids can open the gate easily with the remote. They would not have been able to open latches or step hard enough on a foot release.
great product - LOVE the remote!
the gate is very sturdy however the wall pads have slipped about 2x. we use it for our two puppies and they have had full reign of the house b/c of it...otherwise - its a great gate. just make sure the wall pads are very secure.
