Customer Reviews of Eurythmics: Sweet Dreams - Video Album
FIVE STAR concert, THREE STAR DVD - Annie Circa '82 - Essential! I think most of the posts on here are whining & complaining too much - let's get straight to the point: if you've been an avid Eurythmics/Annie Lennox fan from the beginning, you already OWN this on VHS, so the DVD is just a convenient way to own the concert early concert for "posterity" - sure the sound is sub-par in some spots, sure the filming isn't too fancy, sure the project/visuals betray their dated circa 1982 vibe...BUT THAT'S WHAT IS MAGICAL ABOUT IT! Track for track, the performances given by ANNIE and DAVE are spot-on BRILLIANT! Annie's androgynous look & haunting, soulful soaring-yet-tuff-as-nails vocals are ABSOLUTELY SPELLBINDING - she's at once white-hot sexy yet detached, aloof - I don't think she's EVER sounded or looked THIS GREAT! I think the early-MTV "Heaven" concert footage is charming and takes me back to watching this as a young teen when it was FIRST AIRED ON MTV in 1982/83 (?) just when the Eurythmics were starting to break in America - that's what this must-have concert DVD captures: a band just beginning to find success, but already charging at the gates, heady & all but swaggering with confidence even back then. Standouts include the amazing live covers of LOU REED's SATELLITE OF LOVE and the French pop classic TOUS LES GARCSON ET LES FILLES - the VHS and/or DVD is worth the price of admission just for these - but I think Annie's haunting version of "JENNIFER" is the high-point of the entire show - really stunning stuff! I also smile when I see the cheap, tacky wraparound London segments at the fictional record company and the cool (if crude) clay animation figures - this holds up just as good today is it did OVER TWO DECADES AGO - and there's the rub: do you really expect it to be any different? We are lucky to have this on DVD, so just BUY IT! [...]
Don't be ragging on Miss Annie! SNAP!
Hindsight is 20/20 and anybody can be a Tuesday morning quarterback. This concert took place when the Eurythmics were young and just becoming famous. No one would rag on original concerts from U2, the Beatles, or the Police, so don't be so harsh on Annie and Dave. The Eurythmics went through transformations, just as Annie tends to do in videos. Their first album "In the Garden" was very sing-songy. It's "Sweet Dreams" that was bass-heavy, dark electronica. In this concert, the Eurythmics give their first album's songs an electronic twist. Annie Lennox is a concert-trained flautist and this concert is one of the rare times when you see her perform on the flute. This concert cannot be compared to their Revenge Tour concert videocassette; they had evolved by then. They got burnt on the "1984" soundtrack and went in a new direction. You've heard the cliche "You gotta work with what you got!" Well, Annie and Dave were working it! Be contextual, viewers and critics!
Live from Heaven!
The electrifying Eurythmics appear live in "Heaven" with the angelic voice of Annie Lennox & the dynomite Dave Stewart performing songs from their first 3 albums. Witness Annie play the flute! Includes some of their earlier music videos. It sounds great on stereo surround sound! Just a note, I used to have this on RCA Videodisc before my player went kerput. It's so great to see & hear these tunes again!
