Can't get it to work? I have read the instructions over and over, but when my son had a fever, I could not get the thermometer to read when I put it in his ear! It is supposed to be quick, but it never worked. My son would be screaming after I tried it several times, and I finally gave up. I still haven't been able to get it to do what it says it will do per the instructions.
Great to have handy, especially for the price
This thermometer worked great for me, my husband and our 3 year old since he's been a baby. It's since been misplaced by the 3 year old so we have to get a new one.

>For those who have complained about inconsistent readings: (1) by the time you get your child to the doctor, even if only 10 minutes later, your child's temp could have easily changed by another degree or two and (2) my doctor (and now I) typically checks both ears to make sure the reading is accurate and the reading is usually off a bit from one ear to the other.

>The reading may not be perfect but you should really use it to get a sense of what you're dealing with. If you are concerned then bring your child in to see the doctor. If you feel confident that your child merely has a cold and that Motrin will get their temp down soon then go for it. If they still feel warm after a little bit of time then call your doctor. Doctors will usually tell you to re-take the child's temp with a rectal thermometer, especially when they are very busy, but if you are sure you want your child to see the doctor then just lie and say that you did use a rectal.

>Separate bit of advice, dosage for fever medication is based on weight, not age of your child. My very hefty 14 month old had a slight fever in the early afternoon. 2 hours after taking Motrin, he was burning up. I used the typical recommended dosage for a 1 year old but she said that it wasn't enough for my son since he's so big.
