The game's forte is clearly its style. Its dialogue, while sometimes lengthy, is often witty and boisterously entertaining. Its characters and environments are bright and vibrant. Its puzzles--in which you often match wacky objects in bizarre situations--are straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon. Few games can match Escape from Monkey Island's humor, and none of them are on the PlayStation2.
Although the character designers and animators were able to achieve a playful style, some of the series' personality was lost in the translation from 2-D sprite-based graphics to 3-D polygons. Still, there's really nothing else like it on the PlayStation2. Gamers looking for something different or wanting to take a break from saving the world from cataclysmic menaces should give this game a shot. --Raymond M. Padilla

Customer Reviews of Escape From Monkey Island
A must get for puzzle lovers - humorless need not apply! This gem of a game is - by far - the best adventure game to come out since classics such as ZORK and A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's part four of the Monkey Island series (MI in short) but you don't need to play the first three to enjoy it - I didn't play them and I had a blast. (Reading the story in the manual will make sense of most of the previous game reference jokes) It's quirky humor and odd references to pop culture here and there make a laugh out loud funny game. However, the game is not all fun and games. The puzzles range from medium-hard to near impossible, people who have played and enjoyed the "Army Men" series press your
If you do decide to purchase this game, do NOT, and I repeat DO NOT purchase or download any sort of guide or FAQ for this game. It's a waste of your money because it'll ruin the game. Once you know what to do, there is no thrill or thought involved.
With a more precise rating system, I'd give EFMI 4.5 stars. 1/2 star off for the shortness of the game (only 3 Acts then the ending battle) and loading times. All in all, an excellent game for the puzzle minded.

This is a game that will have a huge following with some gamers, but most with hate it just for it's genre and not give it a chance. There are many great things about this game, but to me there are just too many bad things.
In the good catagory monkey island has great graphics. To me it kinda looks like toy story or such. Cool cgi animation. There is a lot of humor as you control the sometimes very ignorant hero on his many adventure (or complacated trips for his wife). There is also a TON of exploring to do and at every turn there is another puzzle to keep the story moving, and to me this is one of the main problems with this game.
The puzzles are sometimes things you would never think of. Some of his escapes from various traps etc. are very much like mcgyver, and took me a long time to piece them together, but that may just be me. For most people including me a guide may be a needed, not option thing. I'm far from stupid but some of the puzzles just aren't at all obvious. The controls at times can also be a problem, it takes alot of time to move around many areas and can be a real pain running back and forth. The almost constant loading times are also a problem, whenever dialogue is going on the game is jerky, same with movies, and sometimes the smallest little scene needs a load time.
To me this game shows why this genre of games will never be as popular as the gran turismo's and resident evils. If you have alot of patience and a lot of time this game may be for you, but for me i'll stick to gt 3 for now. At least rent before you buy.

This is one of the funnest games I've ever played and I'm pretty big into games. It's hilarious, mind-racking, and flat-out fun. It offers great puzzles and challenges for all age groups. The only question I have is: When is the next one coming out???
