Customer Reviews of Escaflowne - The Movie
Alternate universe, unrelated to the series Escaflowne is about an earth girl who gets transported to a fantasy world where people use swords, flying ships, and giant robotic battle armor.
The Escaflowne movie has no real relation to the Escaflowne series other than its name and the names of its characters. The story itself is almost completely different (including the ending).
Good parts:
1. The artwork and animation are excellent (far superior to the series).
2. The music is decent.
3. There are some good action scenes.
4. The story is significantly different from the series.
Bad parts:
1. Too many really slow, almost waiting scenes. It was like the artists wanted to show off some of their excellent artwork, but couldn't figure out how to integrate some meaningful dialog with it.
2. The story and character development are not nearly as good, deep, or meaningful as the 26 episode series.
Overall, it's very watchable, it just seems weak when compared to the series. If you are going to watch both the movie and the series, you should probably watch the movie first, because the series is truly excellent and you'll end up disappointed by the average quality of the movie. Again, the movie does NOT ruin any part of the series as long as you understand that the movie characters are NOT the series characters. They simply share the same names and have similar appearances. The movie characters' abilities and backgrounds are typically significantly different from those of the series.
Minor Flaws can't bring it down
Admittedly, I watched Escaflowne The Movie before I saw the TV series and this may change my perceptions a bit. I enjoyed many things about the movie; the animation was very smooth and detailed, the characters were interesting (though many, sadly, were not terribly deep).
After watching the TV series, the movie seemed a bit rushed and it didn't really adhere to the TV series' plot, but nonetheless I enjoyed it thoroughly. The two go together really well as a set. Additionally, the movie's boxed set had a lot of cool extras - like the soundtrack, which is excellent! The box is high quality, and doesn't easily show wear.
While some may find the story lacking at times, Escaflowne is still an enjoyable anime and well worth the purchase. I would, however, recommend that you watch a bit of it before making the investment.
My thoughts on this movie
This movie is one of the best and i think its really original and the opening reminds me of the video at the beginning of onimusha 3 and i believe that this movie is way better than the series because the series is somewhat kiddish and really obsolete in the way that its a 26 epsiode children series and you basically get an overview of the entire series in just one movie which i think is a + and if you're a die hard fan of escaflowne you will apperciate this movie for what it is and i believe it some of the best anime out there and still isnt as korny as gundam is and i believe that gundam was derived by this series/movie either if you want you should buy one of the two the box set of the series or the movie i dont recommend the box set because no one want to spend 3 days just watching an entire series and then watching the movie and find out its same as the series only shorter but the storyline is almost the same the way that hitomi is taken from the mystic moon and sure some parts of the movie are a blur but it you ever get a chance to watch it you will learn to apperciate escaflowne for what it really is "THE BEST OF THE BEST"
