Customer Reviews of Erendira
Wicked, enchanting, grotesque, typical work of "Gabo" This movie does some justice to the book. The production of this movie deserves your attention. For your enjoyment I highly recommend that you read the book (or other Gabriel García Márquez' works) before watching; it will help you figure the characters and the plot as well. Magic Realism at its best.
Magical Realism
First a warning...to really enjoy this story you must totally suspend disbelief, you must not expect clean explanations, you must be familiar with magical realism.
The first time I saw this film, I actually found it boring and confusing, but upon a second viewing, I saw all I had missed the first time around. This is a truly enchanting comedy about a young girl and her struggle to escape the grasp of her abusive grandmother. Few words are spoken by the girl, but she conveys her feelings with the haunted look in her eyes. It would seem that this movie was meant to be a drama, and it is, but it is also a bittersweet comedy that is ironic, satyrical, and deeply satisfying. Best understood when viewed twice.
Surreal, real enought to kill you...
Wonderful movie, a French, Mexican, German production that takes you to a world some people only conjure up in ther minds. For others it is an invited archive to any collection of exquist cinema.
The characters are interesting people and coming from a conquered catholic latin american background i can definitly see who certain aspects of the film are influenced by idiotic traditions...swimming in a sea of knowledge, but in the desert of ignorance and fear...Gabriel Garcia Marquez (rest his spirit) is a read never to miss, and this movie is greatly influenced by his presence as an artist.
This movie is something to admire with the eye for it holds much to see with pleasure and pain.
You will never forget Erendira and her grandmother.
Did you forget your wings? Bring them tommorow...
Come early, and you can be the first...
...Poor Erendira and her kidneys...
