While it owes much of its appeal and appearance to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Eragon can stand on its own as an enjoyable fantasy for younger viewers. Faithfully adapted from the bestselling novel by teenage author Christopher Paolini, this boy-and-his-dragon tale offers clean, fast-paced family entertainment without compromising the darker qualities of Paolini's novel (the first in what is known as the "Inheritance" trilogy). The plot centers on 17-year-old peasant farmboy Eragon (played by appealing newcomer Ed Speleers) who discovers a mysterious blue object that turns out to be an egg that eventually hatches to reveal Saphira, a blue-scaled dragon that quickly grows to full-size. According to prophecy, Eragon is destined to be a dragon-rider like those who once protected a benevolent kingdom, thus reviving an ancient conflict against the army of King Galbatorix (John Malkovich), a former dragon rider who turned to evil, now in alliance with a! dark-magic "Shade" sorcerer named Durza (Robert Carlyle). While the movie serves up familiar fantasy elements and offers little if anything new to fans of the genre (or anyone who's read the books of Anne McCaffrey and Ursula K. Le Guin), it's visually impressive (especially the dragon scenes, with Rachel Weisz providing the telepathic "voice" of Saphira) and full of timeless wisdom, much of it delivered by Eragon's heroic mentor Brom (Jeremy Irons), himself a former dragon rider with memories of past battles and hope for Eragon's future. Add a fair warrior-maiden named Arya (Sienna Guillory) and you've got all the ingredients for a worthwhile (if not particularly original) fantasy that points directly to a sequel. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to individual viewers to decide. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of Eragon (Two-Disc Special Edition)
VERY DISAPPOINTING If you have read the book avoid the movie! They took a unique, rich and enchanting story and made it very commonplace. This movie did not have to be called Eragon as it very loosely resembles the beautifully written story that goes with that name. Some of the best aspects of the book were not just removed they were reversed. The proud, independent and STRONG villagers of Carvahall were turned into dirty, cringing peasants not deserving a moments notice. Galbatorix, who in the book is only mentioned in conversations, makes frequent appearances in the movie for no other reason than to direct Durza to "go get them, NOW." Just a pointless waste of time when good parts of the book were slashed to make it fit to movie length. Arya is no longer a strong, vibrant character. Angela the healer is a pretty young woman instead of an old woman. Solembum the werecat does not exist. Murtagh is barely a character in the movie. The relationship between Brom and Eragon is not developed well so that you don't even care when Brom dies. Farthen Dur does not exist, the Varden live outdoors in the mountains. So, so much chopped and changed. Some of the special effects are pretty good but others are disappointing. The dragon in 1996's Dragonheart was nearly as well rendered. BTW ...Urgals? Look more like Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. <
>I feel sorry for Christopher Paolini. I really wish they had done justice to his wonderful book.
Eragon movie
I thought that this movie was awesome. I love dragons, and thought that, although it was different from the book, it was done beautifully. The effect were some of the best that I have ever seen, and the action was enjoyable to watch. For a teen, it was a great movie to watch. I cant wait for Eldest to come to theaters.
Lost in translation
Let me start by saying if you have read the book don't try watching the movie. There is absolutely no comparison. To make this portion short: events were changed and mashed together, and there were to minor characters left out who play bigger roles in book two. And Murtaugh had all of 10 minutes of screen time. With that said...

>The movie was rather slow paced with no emphasis placed where it should have been. Jeremy Irons character, Brom, seemed to carry the story along instead of the main characters, Eragon and Saphira. In the movie, I felt like events were put into motion without a reason behind them. (In the book everything was thoroughly explained, however I should not compare.) The movie lacked substance and motivation.

>The best things I can say about the movie are the excellent cinematography and CG (plenty of it). Also the acting was great considering what needed to be pulled off. Saphira, the dragon, is only able to communicate by speech through thought. The actor really brought Saphira to life with words and voice only. Amazing!!! Also the actor playing Eragon used his thoughts to communicate with Saphira. The facial expressions he used during these parts were very well done.

>For anyone who has not read the book but has watched this movie and was not "wowed" (like many of my friends) take the time to read it. As I have already said there is no comparison. I know there are reviews out there comparing Christopher Paolini to Tolkien. Based on the book I agree. If only they could have done for Eragon as they did for Lord of the Rings.

>Bottom line: The movie was lost in translation.
