Customer Reviews of Embrace the Moon Tai Chi Chuan
Fluff and stuff If you are serious about legitimate practice of Taijiquan (either a traditional style or standardized practice methods from PRC sports/P.E institutions) then steer clear of this. The instruction is very misleading in certain places as to what is required for growth in practive - healthwise, let alone its martial foundation, or even the core skills of Shisanshi (13 Forms/Methods) which are the foundation of all Taijiquan. This ones for the fringe element of the New Age fad.
This tape is a treasure
My first exposure to Embrace the Moon was at an Adult Ed Class. One of the instructors in the video was my teacher. He, along with Betty Sun and Joi Eden created this short eight move form to give students an easy introduction to taiji. The moves all come from traditional Yang Style 24 Form as taught in China. On the surface, the form seems easy to learn, but as you begin to study seriously you realise that it contains all the powerful principles of taiji. Many people tend to want to rush and miss the deeper meanings in the form. Stillness, calmness, being centered and alert all at the same time are as important as learning the movements of the form. The tape is meant as an introduction to new students and a review for begining students, however after studying with my sifu for several years now, I know that to do Embrace the Moon correctly is complete connection of all the principles of the internal martial arts. Connect the breath, movement, stillness, energy, spirit, flow of chi all in eight simple moves. It is the first step of a wonderful journey. Those of you lucky enough to live in NY may even get the chance some day to study with these masters of the martial arts.
A little help, here, folks?
This is a very nice video: peaceful, slow, easy to follow, and the movements are explained very well.
For about the first 20 minutes of the tape. Then you're on your own, sink or swim - the instruction just stops, and you're expected to follow along on your own, even through brand-new moves!
If you're determined, then don't let that stop you - this tape can be followed, with practice, and strict attention. But it can br frustrating in the beginning, especially if you're not used to Tai Chi.
