Elvis: That's the Way It Is follows the show's genesis from rehearsal to stage, with the performance footage that provides its inevitable climax shot over six nights. The rehearsal footage, expanded for this special edition, offers further proof that Presley's band was simply superb: stripped of the orchestrations and lush choral arrangements that would be grafted onto the stage show, the sextet sounds both tough and nimble. In performance, we're treated to a mostly riveting glimpse of Presley in top vocal form, poised at the brink of bombast. This is Elvis before the onset of portentous Richard Strauss overtures, karate kicks, and tossed scarves, kicking off the show with the classic "That's All Right." If he risks undercutting the punch of his early songs with self-deprecating clowning, he attacks two Ray Charles classics with gusto. The special edition also boasts digitally remastered visuals, crisply remixed Dolby audio, alternate versions that replace the original performances of several tracks (including the extended vamp of "Suspicious Minds"), a theatrical trailer, and a new documentary on the restoration of the film. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews of Elvis: Thats the Way It Is - Special Edition
Elvis, live in Vegas I remember seeing the movie when it originally came out, and thinking how all the rock stars of that day appeared so unimpressive compared to Elvis....so I bought the movie and the same is still true today. I guess that's why he's still the king.
Not so special for me!...
I'm being very generous giving this film 3 stars, only because it DOES include a lot of great never-before-seen footage...however, this so called "Special Edition" is ruined for me because in order to GET this extra footage, they deleted 3 songs from the original version of the film! ("I Just Can't Help Believin'", "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Sweet Caroline"...probably my favorites!!!) To make matters worse, the original version of this film has been GONE ever since, and doesn't look like it will ever be re-released! Another insult is the fact that there is a short documentary included on the special edition all about how this edition was edited!!! (butchered would have been a better word!!!) I'm not saying this new edition is not enjoyable...it is...but why was anything from the original version deleted from this one?!!! This new version runs for only 109 minutes...that's well under two hours!!! Why were these three great songs taken out???!!! I wouldn't have minded this new edition so much if the original version was still available, but it's not!!! I have the original on VHS and it looks like I'll have to keep it. I didn't buy the DVD when it was still around because I heard the special edition was coming out...big mistake!!! If I had only known!!! For some reason, Elvis products usually have to be released about 3 times before they get it right!!! The recently released box set of the "68 Comeback" could have been better too!!! The entire production number of "It Hurts Me" is only on this set in segments, the way it was originally taped! In order to get the song in one piece, you have to get the newly released single disc version of the special!!! I've read somewhere that this was just a mistake, but I'm not sure I believe it...I think it's just a way to get the fans to buy the same product over and over, because this kind of thing happens all the time!!! Imagine! A 3-disc set of the "68 Special" and you STILL have to buy it again to get something they left out!!!
I just can't help believin..it's not included..!
Recently purchased the "Special Edition" version of this DVD. Thank goodness I recorded this on VHS from the TNT broadcast of this event in 2001, and still have the original VHS release of this in my collection.

>Why..? because two of Elvis' seminal live recordings are omitted from this so-called "Special Edition"; namely, "I Just Can't Help Believin'", and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (both of which were on the original TNT presentation). From a performance aspect, I can understand the editing for "Bridge..", as the version in "ELvis On Tour" is one of his most powerhouse vocals, if not being the the all-time definitive live performance of this song; but to eliminate "Believin'" from this version of the movie, after putting the track on the menu portion of the DVD and including Elvis' own trepidation regarding the words is unforgivable. Once more, not only is the casual Elvis fan robbed of one of his finest performances, but the serious fan will never understand why they keep getting short shrift on what should be a reverent retrospective of an enormous talent.

>Overall, a fantastic look back at a portion of Elvis' career that sometimes gets dismissed - he's at the top of his vocal ability, the band is tight, and it's a cryptic look at a top-flight stage show from inception to final curtain.

>Now, Time/Warner and Ernst Jorgenson, how about the same treatment for "Elvis On Tour"...? It's long overdue.
