Elvis: That's the Way It Is follows the show's genesis from rehearsal to stage, with the performance footage that provides its inevitable climax shot over six nights. The rehearsal footage, expanded for this special edition, offers further proof that Presley's band was simply superb: stripped of the orchestrations and lush choral arrangements that would be grafted onto the stage show, the sextet sounds both tough and nimble. In performance, we're treated to a mostly riveting glimpse of Presley in top vocal form, poised at the brink of bombast. This is Elvis before the onset of portentous Richard Strauss overtures, karate kicks, and tossed scarves, kicking off the show with the classic "That's All Right." If he risks undercutting the punch of his early songs with self-deprecating clowning, he attacks two Ray Charles classics with gusto. The special edition also boasts digitally remastered visuals, crisply remixed Dolby audio, alternate versions that replace the original performances of several tracks (including the extended vamp of "Suspicious Minds"), a theatrical trailer, and a new documentary on the restoration of the film. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews of Elvis: Thats the Way It Is - Special Edition [Region 2]
The King Lives on 1970, Las Vegas, flushed with the success of the 68 comeback special and the subsequent Memphis album Elvis put on this series of scintillating shows. The DVD collects the best performances from these shows, together with a lot of rehearsal footage and what you get is a fascinating film showing you Elvis still *pretty much at the top of his game. Critically Elvis seems to be in charge of whats going on with the music. Watch the early rehearsal scenes and you will see a man who knows exactly what he wants. Whether its telling the backing singers what they need to do or sorting out musical arrangements. <

>I say *pretty much because for me Elvis peaked with the 68 comeback special. Here he has put on a few pounds in weight, and perhaps most critically the rock n roll material doesn't seem to work as well as the rip roaring black leather set from the 68 show. <

>The backing band on these shows was truly superb. I have watched Suspicious Minds many times and the drummer is amazing. In fact you can see that Elvis was probably a frustrated drummer himself as he is equally absorbed with the fills the drummer plays at the of every "because I love you so much baby". James Burton is on guitar and that is another reason to buy the DVD as he is one of the great unsung heros of rock n roll guitar playing. <

>So overall you get Elvis still close to his peak, giving mostly great performances. The DVD is in proper widescreen cinema ratio (2.35:1) and the picture quality is excellent for a 37 year old film. This is the best Elvis DVD to buy after the 68 comeback special. <

Where's Just Pretend?
I wouldn't have bought it if i'd have known songs had been cut out. We were dooped.
Elvis at his prime!
This DVD is absolutely wonderful...a compilation of his first appearances in Las Vegas after being off stage making movies for several years. He looks so good, sounds great and is forever the showman! My grandchildren like to watch it and my grandson loves to stand in front of the TV and imitate Elvis.....another generation to be charmed by Elvis!
