Customer Reviews of Elgar and the English Choral Tradition
A wonderful recording of wonderful works I will preface this by saying that I bought this recording for one reason - it is the first commercially available recording of Howells' Sine Nomine, a stunning work from a composer who is far too little known outside of England. Those who only know his beautiful chuch anthems are missing out on the wealth of his concert works. This work in particular emminates an impressionistic aura that is quite overwhelming. The only unfortunate fault of this recording is soprano Pauline Alston's misreading of her first solo - she is a whole step too high! While this is a bit offputting, the orchestra is fabulous and the rest of the track is fabulous. I recommend this work for anyone searching for another impressionist composer. The other excellent work on this CD is the Prayer by Bridge. It is a beautiful work and has echoes of Holst's Ode to Death but is still gorgeous and well performed. Bravo to the perfomers - now for Howells' Sir Patrick Spens!
