A misnamed collection of Elgar string works I don't like this CD as much as the other reveiewer here, in part because everything on this CD sounds the same, is played is pretty much the same meter, and sounds like it is for string orchestra...whether there are other instruments involved or not. I would call this Ross Pople's inventory of Elgar elegies. If that's what you're looking for, this CD should serve you well because the playing is good and the sound is smashing. <

>A low priced import in its day (this is still available new in England) the CD provides a view of Elgar's more intimate music, cautiously played by Pople and the festival group. The contents -- Introduction And Allegro Op.47, Serenade For Strings Op.20, Chanson De Matin, Op15, No.2, Chanson De Nuit, Op15, No.1, Mot D'Amour, Op.13 No. 1, Salut D'Amour, Op.12, Minuet Op.21, Elegy Op.58, and the suite from Elgar's opera 'The Spanish Lady' -- are probably not well-known to anyone except Elgar completists. <

>The Intro & Allegro and Serenade for Strings are two of Elgar's masterpieces. Pople plays the first with less than full throttle and the serenade comes off very sweet and sentimental; it is easily the best thing on the disk. The others are forgettable unless your passion is to spend 35 minutes wandering around in second drawer Elgar that is elegaic and without distinction. I thought the latter half of this CD came as close to classical elevator music as anything I've heard in recent years. <

>Elgar completists will want this survey for the lesser known stuff. Everyone else should stick to one of the better and more well-known interpreters, in my opinion. This little concert won't do anything to alter Barbirolli's stature as the greatest Elgarian of the recording era. His recording of the two major pieces here, the Introduction & Allegro and Serenade, is still available for less money than you'll spend to buy this. <

A wonderful collection of Elgar miniatures...
Poor Elgar, known to the masses for his overplayed "Pomp and Circumstance Marches", has a reputation for stuffy music. Not true!
On this disc, another winner in a series from Ross Pople and the London Festival Orchestra on the budget Arte Nova label, we are treated to fine performances of Elgar's beautiful Serenade for Strings and touching "Elegy" also for strings. Also the performance of the suite from "The Spanish Lady" is all light and charm. Marvelous.
The works on this disc that work best are those for strings. The only thing that prevents this disc from receiving 5 stars is that some of the earlier works, the lighter Chansons de Matin and Nuit (Op 15, Nos 1 & 2), the Mot D'Amour (Op. 13) and Salut D'Amour (Op. 12) seem slight compared to the other works. But that could just be a matter of personal taste. Still overall it is a very enjoyable disc that may change your mind about the 'stuffy' Edward Elgar.
