Customer Reviews of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Zoom Tour Live
Not bad, but it could have been better Well, I've had my eye on this dvd for ages and I finally got it! I've bought all their albums over the years and have become quite a fan! I wasn't sure what to expect because the Dvd was recorded in 2001, long after most of these songs were originally performed.
Now, for the dvd. Richard Tandy and Jeff Lynne are the only original ELO members here. The other band members do a pretty good job, but I was expecting more! For one, where's the violin?? ELO songs don't sound the same without one!! Jeff's voice doesn't sound too bad for his age. His vocal range is no where near as good as it once was. In some songs he sounds rather FLAT!
Overall, the dvd isn't too bad. They perform most of the popular ELO songs from the 70's and the Zoom album. I the overall performance is a bit lacking. They haven't gone to much effort to make the concert interesting. It doesn't have the atmosphere of other dvd's like Simply Red Live in London. There isn't enought ENERGY in this dvd. I personally get more out of listening to the original cd's!
So, if you're choosing between ELO's Greatest Hits cd and this dvd, get the cd!! ELO sounded much, much better on their original albums than on this!
ELO never sounded better!
Fully expecting one of my favorite bands of the 70s & 80s to sound like so many of the groups of that era who have long since outlived themselves, I bought this DVD hoping I was dead wrong. I was. From the first cut to the last Jeff Lynne and his new formed ELO sound simply great. Yes, it is not the same group, but really, it doesn't matter. Lynne's voice is in excellent form, his guitar licks are all there, and the backing vocals, strings, and synth bring to life some of the best music of an era that still today proves to be some of the most innovative in rock music. To put it succinctly, if you are (or were) and ELO fan, you *will* enjoy this DVD. The DTS sound track is so good, I spent 2 days learning how to extract it from the disc and burn it onto CD so I could listen to it on the road. Pop it in and crank it up!
ELO - Zoom Tour Live
I agree with other comments I've seen: if you're an old ELO fan, this DVD is excellent. I was certainly not disappointed.
