Not bad, not great, just average
Over the years, I have been a fairly large fan of Nick Arcade, a Nickelodeon game show that was produced from 1991-1992. One of the video games that was featured on the show (but I don't think got played by any contestant) was El Viento. I wanted to try the game after seeing it featured on there, and now I have done so. How does it measure up? Read on for my review of El Viento.

PROS:
-IT'S A SIDE-SCROLLING ACTION/ADVENTURE GAME. On classic eight and sixteen-bit consoles, these were some of the finest games of all, and for the most part, this game is a solid one.
-YOUR CHARACTER CAN USE A SERIES OF MAGICAL ABILITIES IN ADDITION TO STANDARD ATTACKS. These abilities help the game to gain some individuality when compared with other games of a similar styling.

CONS:
-THE GAME IS PAINFULLY GENERIC. As much as a like this game, there's really nothing here that can make me say that it's any more than a typical side-scrolling action adventure game. The storyline is generic, the magical powers are generic, basically EVERYTHING about this game is generic.
-SOME OF THE AI IS JUST TERRIBLE. Many of the enemies seem completely brainless when compared to enemies you face in other games of the same stylings.
-THERE ARE BETTER GAMES LIKE THIS ON THE SYSTEM. Just about every well-known game of a similar styling released on the Genesis is better than this one. Take my advice and opt for Golden Axe, Altered Beast, or Castlevania: Bloodlines instead.
-THE GRAPHICS ARE PRETTY LAME. The graphics on the Genesis aren't that good to begin with, but honestly, they could have done WAY better than this!

OVERALL:
Overall this is a painfully generic game. It's not bad, but it's certainly far from great. If you can find it for a very low price and you're a Genesis owner, you may want to consider picking it up. Otherwise, just pass it by.

The quest begins... for El Viento
El Viento is game that deals with the gathering of mystical
energies. I have played this game,several years ago and
found it interesting enough, as I found most of Sega of
America games. It kept me going while I was waiting for
Shinobi. I tend to like any game with martial arts and a
mystical background, since I'm a big fan of Marvel Comics
Dr. Strange,Master of the Mystic Arts. El Viento certainly
fits the bill, if you like this kind of stuff...I high recommend
it.

Mindless and forbidding
El Viento is the precursor of Earnest Evans, and sports similarities with that God-forsaken game in all areas. El Viento suffers from a variety of problems, which I will disect below:

Concept - cliche and boring. You are the only one who can save the world and so you set off. Blah. All the areas are strangely similar in coloring (washed-out pastels), and you never get any idea where you are or what you are doing there. The main heroine is so generic that you will have trouble telling her from the background. The "magic powers" you get as back-up weapons are pitifully absurd and generic (a bolt of fire, an arch of energy, a string of bubbles that roll on the floor...). Thank God they didn't equip her with the almighty lightning bolt...

Control - horrible. Shaky, unresponsive, and otherwise malfunctional.

Graphics - blah. Objects are frequently out of focus, proportion, color, etc. The game suffers from HORRENDOUS slowdown, which, in places, will prevent you from moving at all. Colors are drab, and very, very similar to each other.

Balance - the game balances out lack of AI with hundreds upon hundreds of nausiatingly absurd enemies that cause such slowdown as if the game's designers were decidely trying to put the player to sleep. Frequently you won't be able to walk, or fire your weapon, and all the while the opposing terrors will nick away at your health, killing you almost by default.

The only reason to buy this pathetic game would be for laughs, like renting Santa Claus Conquers the Martians or Robot Monster on video.
