Customer Reviews of Edward R. Murrow: The Best of "Person to Person"
The best of Edward R. Murrow's interviews, 1953-1959 In the beginning the dominant figure in television news was Edward R. Murrow. His broadcasts from London rooftops during the blitz, the 1954 telecast of "See It Now" exposing Senator Joseph McCarthy, his landmark documentaries such as "Harvest of Shame" about the plight of migrant workers, are the high-water marks of his legendary career as a newsman. "Person to Person" was Murrow's interview show that ran on CBS from 1953-1961. Each Friday night Murrow would "visit" with two celebrities in their homes. Being chosen was as much an ordeal as it was an honor since showing television cameras around your home was a major operation. As this tape shows, Murrow intereviewd actors and actresses, musicians, politicians, heads of state, scientists, inventors and anybody who was in the news for whatever reason. Murrow's visit with Senator John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline might be the most famous, but I like the visit to Groucho and Harpo Marx. You have to love a show that will talk to both Marilyn Monroe and Margaret Mead. Think of this video journey through yesteryear as a visual counterpart to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Star the Fire." Of course, if you recognize most of the people on this tape as soon as you see them, you must be older than I am. Murrow was the host of "Person to Person" until 1959, at which point he was replaced by Charles Collingwood and the show did more world traveling along with more spots filmed/taped on location. To really honor Murrow, the god of television journalism, it would be nice if his more traditional news work was available on videotape as well.
Very Interesting Stuff!
I'm 49 and never saw this show, (which aired during the '50's), but found it most interesting, and so bought a number of copies to make it available to you too. As I watched it I realized that Ed Murrow was the "granddaddy" of the modern day Larry King, et al, shows. He took his cameras right into the homes of the most interesting celebrities of the 50's, gave us a interesting, informal and personal look at them, which we would not have otherwise seen. Interviews included are with: John, Jackie and Bobby Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart & Loren Bacall, Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, Duke Ellington, Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward, Arthur Rubenstein, Sophia Loren, Harpo & Groucho Marx, Kirk Douglas, Jesse Owens, Fred Astaire, Benny Goodman, Milton Berle and Bette Davis. Here's a genuine piece of '50's nostalgia of people we still in our hearts and minds today. Very much recommended!
