Customer Reviews of Early Dot Recordings, Vol. 3
Pure gold... Essential classic bluegrass In his prime, tenor vocalist and sweet superpicker Mac Wiseman was one of the greatest and most heartfelt bluegrass performers. He had a great stint with Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys at the end of the 1940s, then early in the 1950s set out on his own, recording some of the best bluegrass of that golden decade. This CD is, mysteriously, the only one of three volumes of his classic '50s material still in print. If you like sweet-sounding heart songs and restrained, elegant playing, then this disc is for you. Don't hesitate to snap it up.
Among The Finest Recordings From Early Days Of Bluegrass
Mac Wiseman was one of the true pioneers of bluegrass music. His finest recordings are those made with Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys for Columbia in 1949 (see Monroe's "16 Gems") and those made as a solo artist for Dot in the early and mid 1950s (Wiseman also had a short stint with Flatt and Scruggs in the late 1940s). County reissued many of Wiseman's early Dot sides in a 3 volume series; only this 3rd volume is available on CD (the song selection on the 3rd volume is arguably the strongest of the bunch). Great sidemen include Jimmy Williams and Tommy Jackson. Sharp packaging with great notes by Bill Vernon.
