Customer Reviews of ESPN NFL Football
Great online but.. Ok yes this game has great graphics and a fun online mode to play with tons of people. To make this short and sweet, this game is way too annoying with the camera angle(first person)because you can't see whats going on, and the gameplay is too hard for a football game to be fun. My advice would be to go out and buy a REAL football game.(Madden)
Play this game online
ESPN football is a great game a lot because of online play and some of the little other things like you have your own house that has games in it that you can play. but the online play is amazing alot better then madden and the controls are really simple alot easier then maddens it took me a day to get good with the controls on this game and 3 days in madden i suggest you buy htsi game over madden. Madden has the worst annoucing of any game all it is is madden saying really stupid thigs like if they dont move the ball they wont score and thingsl ike that that are kinda obvious. BUY THIS GAME
Goodbye Madden! Hello ESPN!
I just got my Xbox and this was one of the first games I bought for it. I already had Madden 2k4 on my PC, but this blows it away!
My PC is a fast machine (1.6 ghz, NVidia 4200 Ti which is better than the Xbox's chip) and yet, ESPN NFL Football plays smoother and looks better! How that is on a TV is beyond me! But, after 8+ years on the PC with Madden (and a few attempts from other companies that failed), Xbox is the way to go for me.
First person is tough to do and it's something I probably won't play all the time, but it is neat to see. On offense, if you're executing a running play, you become the running back. If you're passing, you become the QB until you pass, then you switch to the receiver. On defense, it's a lot harder! You can hit a button that switches you to a player closest to the ball carrier. It switches to an outside view first in slow motion and then, once you've gotten your bearings, switches back to the first-person view at normal speed. Also, some signals on the screen will pop up to alert you where the player with the ball is, but it takes some getting used to. It's not something I'd play a full season with, but it's still fun.
The crunches and hits you hear while playing seem realistic. I never played football myself in real life, but it sounded real! The crowd's reactions to what happens on the field is great. I was getting so immersed in this game when playing it, that I felt like I was watching a real football game. Seeing the crowd's reaction is funny, especially if you're playing away and you've just scored. My game between the Colts and Browns was great. Just seeing the dejected look on some of the fans was hilarious. It's really scary seeing some of those fans shirtless with their team's name painted on their chests. Maybe Sega went a little too far with the beer guts some of those fans have! ;) Overall, I feel it just brings the whole NFL experience that much closer into your living room and makes the game that more exciting.
The half-time show with Boomer is awesome. His overview of the game, including the stats, just seem to flow so smoothly and doesn't seem to be hacked together. Even the commentary during the game is great. The commentary in Madden get's old and repetitive, but ESPN seems to have a breath of fresh air with it's commentary. And, it doesn't seem patched together, especially when they bring in the name of the team or players. The dialogue just seems to flow smoother than Madden and sounds natural. It's also funny and actually enjoyable to listen to, unlike Madden.
The game seems to be fairly balanced out of the box. With Madden, it seemed too hard on defense for me (always getting scored on and never being able to stop a thing) and too easy on offense. You had to tweak the AI and even then, that never seemed to work completely. It caused something to become lopsided. With ESPN, it seems to be pretty balanced out of the box, and I like that!
The Crib is neat. It's nothing really new. It's just a different way to look at your user stats, but it's fun and it makes you want to play harder to get more and more trophies into your "crib".
The graphics are outstanding. I dare to say they beat what I get on my PC with Madden 2004 and the players just move so much more fluidly than they do on the PC. I guess in many respects, it's due to the architecture of the Xbox and not having to compete with other services eating up the resources of the machine unlike the PC. Plus, all the graphics is done by the on-board video chip and the CPU isn't needed to funnel any of the info to the GPU.
Will I get Madden 2k4 for the Xbox? Nope. ESPN NFL Football beats Madden which IMHO I feel was one of the best football games out there. Of course, it was the only one for me while I only had my PC. But, now with an Xbox, my opinions have changed.
Excellent game, Sega. Keep up the good work and give EA a run for their money. The more competition that comes out, the better it is for us in the long run as each competitor will try to lure us to the best game available. It can only get better from here on out!
