Customer Reviews of E-Book Systems, Inc. Caveo Anti-Theft PC Card
Now I can leave my laptop on my desk! Now I don't have to worry if I leave my laptop on my desk for a few minutes. If anyone moves my laptop, the alarm sounds, and it can be heard all the way down the hall. There are a few things I'd change if I could: I'd take away the stupid "earthquake" effect on screen that happens if you mistype your password ... a simple "wrong password" message would work. And if you forget it's armed and move your laptop, you should get more time to enter your password before it shuts down the laptop. But all it all, a great product!
use at your own risk
I installed the caveo antitheft into a Dell Latitude laptop and set it up according to the manufacturers instructions. After an initial test of the alarm and a couple of successful reboots. I left the computer alone for 2 days. An attempted restart and reboot gave me a the following nightmare which I documented below with the suggestions for remedy from their customer support (which took two days to respond):
> To technical support:
>
> I have installed the Caveo anti theft device and have successfully installed and used
> the computer twice since installation.
> Now on the third time it locks my computer from access.
Have you purposely or accidently alarmed the device or installed
any other software or used the Windows XP "Last Know Good" or
system restore functionality recently?(this was not the case)
> When I boot up my Dell Latitude 610 windows XP Pro installed and with
> the caveo antitheft card installed I get a message that reads:
> no valid caeo antitheft card present
> The current caveo antitheft card is not registered on this computer
> please insert the correct registered card immediately
This would suggest that either you are using a different card than
was originally associated with the laptop(not possible), or some information stored in your laptop has been corrupted(duh).
Do you have multiple Caveo Anti-Thefts cards that you maybe mixed
up?(no) Has your computer recently crashed, perhaps resulting in some corrupted information?(no)
> The screen goes black and only leaves a pointer
> Please send me instructions to access my hard drive. It is critical that I do this immediately.
The Caveo software is behaving as it should if the device is not
the same as the one you originally installed or if the data
on the hard drive has been corrupted.
I would recommend using the Windows XP system restore functionality.
You can access it by booting from your windows xp cdrom or using safemode. It essentialy moves your operating system back in time
to a previous checkpoint.

Caveo Technology
I assume the above documented episode was the result of either the Caveo failing or a software issue with the caveo code, but was not due to miss installing the hardware, software, or as they suggested mixing up several cards(since I only own one).So the result of using this product forced me to reinstall the operating system and all software from the Dell disks supplied, as well as installing the required drivers for the devices installed. A process which lost all data and took the better part of a day. This also effectively defeats the purpose of having the lock out feature, in that a thief could simply reinstall an operating system on the lap top. If this is a possible nightmare you are willing to live with, I suggest you go ahead and buy this product, otherwise, stay away.
