If you've never touched an earlier version of the game, here's what to know: Dynasty Warriors is a fighting game series played from the third-person perspective, where you pick a military general as your avatar and fight through across sprawling battlefields. The generals all have distinct personalities, and there are a few women characters included, too. As you campaign, you collect special items--such as the Dragon Amulet, which increases your Musou gauge (Musou allows you to enact special, prolonged attacks on multiple enemies.) You have bodyguards, you kill enemy generals, and along the way your new skill points increase your weapon's power.
With DW4, there are many new additions, only some of which are successful. Charge attacks and items are souped up and truly improved. For example, equipping a magic orb can cause you to freeze enemies in a block of ice. You can edit characters, but with so many good preset ones to choose from, chances are you won't spend a lot of time working on your own. In addition to a better game engine, there's also the option of one-on-one-duels. The maps are immense compared to previous editions, with a lot more variance in what can happen by the end of your mission.
Even with a significant number of new features, it's debatable whether Dynasty Warriors 4 is a true overhaul, or just another release to cash in on the massive popularity of the franchise. Regardless, it's addictive for reasons that almost defy explanation. You just want to clear this act, to get to the next stage, and to reveal the goodies you've received from killing that big boss. It's as simple as that. And at the moment when you can knock down an entire platoon with a couple hits, well, then you'll join the ranks of the dedicated. --Jennifer Buckendorff
Pros:
- Many more (and much improved) maps
- Complex and compelling charge attack functions
- Improved fighting AI makes enemies noticeably trickier
Cons:
- "Siege engine" function mostly a novelty
- Still tedious retracing of steps, even with speed boots
- Disappointing officer customization

Customer Reviews of Dynasty Warriors 4
A great game! Well, I have sunk some solid time into DW4, and I am quite impressed. No, KOEI didn't deliver as much as I expected, but when your expectations were as high as mine, you can't expect perfection (notice I still gave this 5 stars!).
What's good about DW4 is actually great. KOEI decided that it would finally have normal enemies do damage to your character and attack you en masse, rather than wait for you to kill off whoever you were fighting at the time. This has the effect of making the game much more exciting; you must constantly change your perspective so that you don't get ambushed by another officer/grunt. Also, it is no longer possible to immediately run through and get every character's most powerful weapon (as was the case in DW3 and Xtreme Legends). Instead, you must play with one character long enough to power up his initial weapon (via a weapon experience system) before the fabled level 10 weapon can be obtained. Also, officers sometimes duel with you, and these duels are immensely fun, and are often times just as nervewracking as a 30-1 battle! There are multiple storylines, multiple movies, and hidden Musou missions for Lu Bu, Yuan Shao, Dong Zhuo, etc. The graphics are very nice (although this was never a problem with DW3), and the gameplay is top notch.
Where the game disappoints is in its use of its advertised Siege Engine. KOEI had promised a more strategic element, where the player could use catapults, battering rams, etc. in order to get a tactical advantage over his opponent. However, this fails to deliver; really, the only advantage of using the Siege Engine elements is the ability to see some cut scenes. I mean, this is nice, but it isn't strategical. I was a bit disappointed here.
However, this game continues to be the best hack-n-slash battle simulation on the market. I strongly urge any fan of the original to buy this, as well as anyone who just wants to have some mindless fun. However, if you were intrigued by the possibility of a more mental engagement, this game isn't for you. I hope that KOEI does better with the Siege Engine in the next installment.
THIS GAME ROCKS, WAY ADICTIVE
Pro's-This game has awsome graphics and a great storyline.Im a fan of the whole series.Only 3 new charecters Tho.One of those charecters are good {Zhou Tai} He is awsome. The maps are better and they have incorperated alot more stages into the game. The weapon system is so smooth. Now all you have to do is get expirience to get the new weapon instead of having to find them. The duel modes are cool but the time 40 seconds is kinda short. The only duel you dont want to get into is With Lu Bu It is extreamly hard when its not on easy{Even getting near this guy,He is located on Hu Lao gate}other than that duels are fun.Alot of the bad charecters from dw3 are improved and some stronger ones are toned down. Some 4th weapons are extreamly hard to get{Hince Lu Bu's},but other than that the weapons are easyier to get than in dw3.Horse fighting has been improved.
Con's-In the harder difficulties your generals die extreamly quick. You need to work fast and have a plan otherwise you can loose very easily expecially on the {Nanman Campaign}.It still takes a while to run somewere its painstaking when you need to save an oficer, but thats all part of the dw4 experience right?Even these cons cannot stop the constent game play of this awsome game!!![.]
Fantastic!
This is by far the best addition to the Dynasty Warriors series to date. Dynasty Warriors 4 has more characters, more levels, enhanced gameplay and graphics, improved artificial intelligence, and in fact, is better than its predecessors in every single way.
Musou mode has been replaced by Kingdom mode, which is basically the same thing, except you can change characters within a kingdom at any time of your choosing. Also, you can play as part of the kingdoms of Yuan Shao, Dong Zhuo, Meng Huo, or Lu Bu.
The weapons system is much better than before. You can build up weapons, and get level five weapons, which are incredibly powerful. There are three new characters, one per each kingdom. Among them is one of my personal favorites, Zhou Tai. There are more levels then ever before, each level is revamped, and due to a new AI system, each stage is slightly different everytime you play it.
The create a warrior (CAW) still needs some work. You are very limited in what you can do, appearance, weapon and movement-wise, and at this point, the CAW really isnt worth your time. There is a nice compendium of information on all the officers, even the nonplayable ones.
Interestling, two characters are missing in Dynasty Warriors 4 from Dynasty Warriors 3. The mythological characters Nu Wa and Fu Xi. While neither, even mythologically, existed in this time period, they were still interesting additions, and we're the only characters to use a rapier and claymore, respectively.
This game is simply fantastic, and is highly addictive. If you are going to by any Dynasty Warriors game, make it this one, because it is by far the best of the series.
