A great showcase for the PlayStation2 platform, Dynasty Warriors 3 is both a terrific hole-up-for-the-weekend title and a good multiplayer party game. The developers must have been busy with many a user test and feedback survey form: most of the features people complained about in DW2 have been overhauled or tweaked. These improvements mixed with the addition of the two-player option make this a truly great PS2 title. If you liked the last version, you'll be enthralled with this combination of compelling story and complex martial arts action.

Parents--and anyone else interested in a game that's a little more socially redeeming than some of the current fare--take note: Dynasty Warriors 3 is loosely based on remarkable Chinese legends. The violence is well-done and subtle, and playing this game could actually cause your kid to pick up a book (something other than a strategy guide).

Here's what's different:

  • New characters--and more characters--all with unique personality traits.
  • Great new cinematics (they're better visually, and provide a more compelling story line).
  • RPG-style weapons management and "found items."
  • Two-player games, including cooperative musou and free mode, and combative single games.
  • Fewer life buns, which means players must be more judicious within big battles (and you can no longer think of officers as food sources).
  • Important updates are now spoken aloud instead of flashing by as screen text.
  • More balance in the powers given to each character.
  • Characters have been recalibrated so that individuals other than the big bruisers--including women characters--have their own advantages. (Zhang He may even be the first gay character in one of these games, based on his killer figure-skating attack.)
  • Archers are now even more of a threat, and are reasonably indestructible.
  • For many maps, you now have to be a general before even thinking of climbing on a horse.
  • One word: elephants

Here's what stayed the same (some of which probably should have changed):

  • Sparse maps that cause you to retrace your steps frequently.
  • The stupid Limp Bizkit-meets-Yes soundtrack.
  • The controls, which is only nice for those of us who built up calluses on the last version.

Customer Reviews of Dynasty Warriors 3

Extremely addictive
After playing DW 2 more than a year ago, I could hardly wait to enjoy the third installment in the series. Luckily, I was not disappointed in any way.
DW 3 is a massive improvement over it's predecessor in almost every aspect.

First of all, the graphics are much better. The characters are all extremely detailed and even the npc's have received a good deal of attention. The special effects are stunning, you'll be pleasantly surprised when u use your 'true musou' for the first time.
When riding through an empty stage you'll notice that's exactly what it is: empty. This is the only (minor) complaint I have about the graphics, a bit more vegetation and buildings would've been nice.
For the biggest part the game looks great, the buildings , bridges and especially the horses. There is some trouble with fogging, but this is understandable with the amount of action going on at once, and it hasn't really bothered me.

Secondly, the gameplay, this has been improved even more than the graphics.
In this game the point is to secure victory for your army. There isn't really much strategy involved since you can single-handedly wipe out entire armies as long as your commander survives. This is more entertaining than it probably sounds due to the variety of ways to destroy enemies. Besides slashing at them with your unique weapon, you can also use a bow or trample them down on horseback or just watch as allies and enemies take eachother on.
It seems Koei has put quite some effort in making this game as addictive as possible, and not without result.
With over 40 characters to choose from, just completing the game with everyone is an enormous ( but extremely fun ) task.
Add to this various perfomance enhancing items which can be maxed out, and four weapons for each character with unique stats and you'll be playing this game for a long time.

The storyline is also very interesting since the Dynasty Warriors series is based on the Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms".
Some knowledge of this book is very helpfull to better understand the story, but not neccesary to play and enjoy the game. However, if you have red the book, the game will be even better.

Personally, I'm still enjoying the game and I have no hesitations about recommending this game to every action/fighting
game fan out there.

The best.
I bought this game about.. Three years ago, I believe. I still play it often. I hardly ever, ever buy games. I rent them, beat them, then never sink anymore money in them. This time around I rented it twice, then bought it. It's such an awesome game.
If you buy Dynasty Warriors 4, instead of getting Dynasty Warriors 4 XL, get Dynasty Warriors 3.
DW3 serves up mass amounts of old karate-flick, bloodless and mindless slaughter action with tons of characters. Each character has his own weapon, his own fighting style, speed, combos, musou, and goes through a slightly different set of levels. Almost all the legendary generals are in the game; Guan Yu, Lu Bu, Cao Cao, and I believe, thirty more officers?
The levels vary in size, offer different obstacles, and none of them resemble the last. Offering a change of scenery instead of the boring same old hack and slash over and over again ( remember Dark Cloud? Hopefully not ). Most levels allow for only one way to win, kill the enemy's general. Others make things more complicated, i.e, pursuing fleeing enemy generals, holding back uprisings, raiding fortresses, kicking bandits out of small villages, you know, the usual.
DY3 offers something lacking in the earlier versions. The dreaded elephants. If you haven't played this game, but wonder what the whole hype is about people complaining about them, or praising them, well.. They suck ( the elephants that is). Sure it's fun to get on an elephant and tear down walls and stomp enemies to death. To get an elephant though.. That's difficult.

Now onto the ratings...

Graphics: 4.5/5
The graphics are all in 3D, the characters all very detailed and portrayed nicely even in the heat of battle, the only small downfall would have to be with the landscapes. It appears you could move onto porches and under the roofs, but no luck. There's walkways that appear to go over water and ravines, but they cannot be used. All in all, you can get around anywhere on foot, but sometimes it gets frustrating with all the lying graphics.

Game Play: 5/5
Come on, this game was perfected for battles. So of course it has awesome game play. There's tons of chain combos you can link together, officers you can challenge, four (five with DW 3 XL) weapons to find and use, all carrying with them new moves to enable longer and more deadly combos, and even fire arrows.
Can't forget to mention all the alternatives to walking on foot, which can get boring in such a massive battlefield. There's many types of horses, some slow and some fast that you can steal from officers and soldiers. Some you unlock by gaining rare saddles, all of which are much faster than the standard common horses you can find. Then there's the elephants, slow moving and amazingly annoying for your enemies.
The game offers different modes; musou, which is like a sort of adventure centered around your one character, free, which allows you to play.. well.. freely in any level that you've unlocked. Co-op mode allows you to play in free mode, or musou with a friend in split screen, which is great fun. There's also mini games for you and your friend to challenge each other with, each of the players gets a team in most of these challenges. There's also one-on-one mode for you and your friend.

Characters: 5/5
I love just about every character. Whatever approach it is that you take to a fighting game, DW3 has the perfect fighter for you. For the hack and slash brute, there's Lu Bu and Xiahou Dun, for the quick and agile there's Zhang He and Nu Wa, for the magic user there's Pang Tong and Sima Yi. I can't forget to mention to anyone and everyone who loves Cloud from FF7, there's even a character for you. He uses a massive sword which may even be larger than Cloud's buster sword. There's many others that can suit you, I only mentioned a few.
Each character uses his own weapon ( halbred, daggers, spear, axe, hammer, mace, club, various different swords, staffs, which are used to cast spells, fans, which are also used to cast lazer-like spells, circular blades, claws, and many, many more.), uses them to kill in their own style, and fights for a slightly different cause than any other. All of the characters has a story that unravels in the game.
Decent voice overs too. Although, Yuan Shao's voice sort of weirds me out.

Replay Value: 6/5
I hardly ever play games over, but this one I play all the time. That actually makes me feel sorry for myself. Whatever. There's many challenges in one level, huge amounts of different units, ambushes, nasty tactics from your enemy, tons of officers that give your character upgrades for killing them, the whole morale thing, and many other factors that add up to a great game. I'd highly advice getting it, before Amazon stops selling it and only allows you to get it used. Hey, and it's pretty cheap for a PS2 game.

Another Hit!
KOEI follows up the super addictive Dynasty Warriors 2 with the aptly named Dynasty Warriors 3. Dynasty Warriors 3 boasts enhanced graphics, heightened artificial intelligence, more characters, greater weapon choices and more stages. This game is more addictive than ever before and is definitely worth your time.

Again, you choose a legendary warrior of China's Three Kingdoms period. The cast is expanded to include a number of other characters. There are also a number of other stages, which just increase the variety of the game. The same basic formula from Dynasty Warriors 2 is present. You basically run around an ancient Chinese battleground and kill enemy soldiers and officers. You cant toy with perfection too much can you? The old stages have been revamped and are, in some cases, radically different then their predecessors.

The graphics are a stepup in Dynasty Warriors 3. While Dynasty Warriors 2 had very good graphics, it had a number of glitches that could be really annoying, such as weaponry going through solid stone when you move. KOEI cut down on these glitches in a major fashion, though truth be told, there are still some present.

This is a fantastic game and is highly addictive. Even the music is awesome, a heavy metal mix that somehow goes so well with brutally killing hundreds of Chinese warriors. Bulk up your favorite warrior and wipe out as many enemies as you can... just wait and see what happens!
