Oddly charming Stockholm's Drottningholm Court Theatre occupies a special place in European opera houses because of its longevity and history of innovation. This compilation commemorates many significant 20th century productions, and although the recordings are sometimes a little rough there are many delights. The accompanying hefty booklet details the theatre's history from 1922 to 1992 (the first recording is 1934) in minute detail with many archival photos, but the text is in Swedish, Italian, German and French; only the cd case's comparatively slim pamphlet details the tracks in English.
The compilation itself features private recordings of performances as well as airchecks from Swedish radio. The music is a bit of a grab bag, but nearly everything sounds authentically 'real' and immediate.
Recommended for connoisseurs of period performances.
