Customer Reviews of Dreaming Fists with Slender Hands (a.k.a. Kung Fu Kids)
Disaffected Asian children share anomie, futility While taking a walk on a beautiful spring day, Li Yan tells his shy girlfriend, Xhoui Zan Pee that he's tired of her because she's poor, plain, and ordinary.Because he's a junior captain of the farm commune planting brigade, and therefore, quite intimadating as well as popular, he feels he should be seeing girls who have more to offer. Xhoui remains silent throughout this speech, but you can really tell by her facial expressions that she's devastated. She goes home and stares into the family's only mirror, cracked and stained with the tears of all her female ancestors who have lived in the same patriarchal society, suffering silently their whole lives. Suddenly she gets very angry and in one of the movies most dramatic scenes, she decides to form a girl gang and be the leader. She changes her hairdo from flat to one reminiscent of the early B52's - big, teased, bouffant, and bleached. She visits all her friends from the People's School of Farm Animal Cooperatives. Turns out, they have had it, too.
THey all change their hairdo's to mohawks, savage pixie cuts in loud primary colors, like crayon red, flesh, and orangey-purple. But this is no mere posing! I can't tell you about the gang initiations, suffice it to say that Li gets his in the end (figuratively as well as literally) in the film's most classically comic scene. The film has it's share of pathos, too, as when Xhoui, our heroine, is forced into a re-education camp for stealing candy and cigarettes, skipping school, gunning down a local town official and some innoceent bystanders with homemade zip guns the girls make in their tractor repair class, painting graffitti on the walls of government buildings And offices, stealing cars, running drugs through their neighborhoods, crashing party line parties and then generally running amok. It's hard not to love the character of Xhoui, a plucky, spirited,Hayley- Mills -wholesome young lady. She's quite an inspiration! You'll love her wonderful gang of hard looking, hard smoking, fast driving, explicit, illicit, gun toting school girls.
A film everyone must see. I highly recommend it!
