Good series, mediocre dub
INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball manga was created by Akira Toriyama, the same person who was previously responsible for the Dr. Slump series, as well as the Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior in America) series of video games. In the latter half of the eighties, Dragon Ball became a Japanese anime. And when the series drew to a close, he created a follow-up series - Dragon Ball Z. This one also became an anime. Nearly six years after its original Japanese release, Dragon Ball Z finally arrived in America. Unfortunately, Toei Animation (the company that created the anime) added in a number of filler episodes, and FUNimation (the owner of the American rights to the series) was forced to make large amounts of edits so that the show would meet American television standards. Though their dub voice actors actually were pretty good, they had a tendency to mistranslate some information and use a good deal of stupid dialogue. Read on for my review of this volume.
EPISODE SUMMARIES:
In the episode that preceeded this one, Bulma, Krillin, and Gohan were left to die by space pirates on a fake Planet Namek. They finally manage to defeat their captors and escape to the real Namek. Unfortunately, two men who dress like Saiyans but aren't Saiyans destroy their ship. Krillin and Gohan kill them easily. Following this, not one but TWO Saiyan Space pods land on Namek - one is Vegeta, one his long time rival Cui. Vegeta kills Cui easily, and sets out to get the Namek Dragon Balls so he can become immortal. Unfortunately, the Z Crew makes a terrible discovery - someone even stronger than Vegeta is ALSO looking for the Namek Dragon Balls - and this new guy already has four of them!
EPISODE OPINIONS:
After a few episodes of pure filler, we get some redeeming value! The battle between Cui and Vegeta is priceless, because it's no contest at all. Unfortunately, it's starting with these episodes that "the next dimension" is the term that becomes used in place of "dead." This line is unrealistically stupid. The dubbed episodes found here aren't terrible, though.
DVD:
This DVD is good because it has better picture quality than a VHS tape, but horrible because it only contains the edited dub, and not an uncut sub like later Dragon Ball Z DVDs. I recently heard word that FUNimation will be redubbing the Saiyan Saga and the former half of the Frieza saga, so don't go out and buy this right away.
OVERALL:
Overall, Namek does a pretty good job continuing the Dragon Ball Z series - but the dub could have been SO much better. Although Dragon Ball Z is an excellent anime, I don't recommend this. I recommend seeing the series in its uncut, original Japanese glory; this dub doesn't do it justice.
Not enough Frieza action, but decent overall.
These are not the best episodes of DBZ ever, but they are still fun to watch. I'm glad that Frieza is in this video, otherwise it wouldn't be any fun, well, actually it would. On my "Tree of Might" DVD I saw previews and clips from the Saiyan episodes and they looked like they would be pretty good. Since this tape is from Pioneer instead of Funimation, the voices do not sound the same, especially Vegeta's. In the tape, Vegeta is STILL evil, and of course does not have a son yet. If you're surprised at that fact, that let me sort it out for you: this is before Frieza has even met Goku!! There, with that, just let me say, these episodes don't have enough Frieza action, but decent overall.
