Grab your BFG and get ready to kick some Martian-demon butt in Doom, another entry in the increasingly crowded videogame-to-movie genre. The Rock plays Sarge, the commander of a squad of Marines sent to investigate a disturbance at a scientific research facility on Mars. Among the squad is John Grimm (Karl Urban, who played Eomer in The Lord of the Rings), who turns out to have had a previous relationship with Samantha (Rosamund Pike, Die Another Day), the scientist who's accompanying the Marines in order to retrieve some vital data from the facility. Based on id Software's legendary first-person shooter, Doom tries its best to look like a game, with dark, angled corridors, ferocious creatures appearing out of nowhere, and a variety of lethal weapons that will, like the aforementioned BFG, warm the cockles of a gamer's heart. There's also one memorable sequence that actually turns the movie into a first-person shooter; the good news is that in the context of the whole film, it's not quite as goofy as it might have been. And that's not a bad frame of reference for the film in general. Considering the game-to-movie field includes such duds as Wing Commander, if you go into Doom with low expectations, you'll probably find it a surprisingly respectable horror/sci-fi thriller in the Resident Evil vein (including its somewhat obligatory subplot of corporate wrongdoing). Also in its favor is that it's unabashedly R-rated, for the extreme gore that is a trademark of the game. After all, the purpose of the movie is to pack scares and thrills into a setting that gamers will quickly recognize. In that sense, it qualifies as a success. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews of Doom (Unrated Widescreen Edition)

It's Doom without the game plot
When i first watched this, I was a bit hesitant. After all, it's the Rock. Most people will agree, he's not what you call an in-stellar actor, but he did do a credible job in this movie. <
> <
>Karl Urban was, as usual, gripping, and fit the role of Reaper to a tee. All in all, this was a good (but not great) sci-fi movie. <
> <
>Now for the low points: <
>1. Complete corruption of the Doom plot. Hollywood, for some reason, has this inherant fear when making video game movies of sticking to the game plots. Not sure why really, but there it is. The Doom game actually did have a good plot as far as first person shooters go. Essentially, elite Marine, going to Mars to investigate strange reports of violence and sabotage occuring within the research division of the Uldelay base. Same as the movie. Here's where they went wrong. Instead of further abusing the population with yet another genetics gone bad plot, stick to the original. The scientists discovered a gateway and upon opening aforementioned gateway, opened a path straight to Hell. That's the plot of the game. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. <
> <
>2. Mentioned above but enough of a pain to mention again: The Genetics Gone Wrong, rinse and repeat plot. Seen this so many times it's just annoying. <
> <
>3. At times the specidal effects are a bit, well, meh. But i'm not going to pound on them too much for this one. <
> <
>4. Should have stuck with the game more and shown all the different monsters from it. Instead of just having Imps that smack people, have them throw their balls of condensced plasma. Have the corrupted squads of Marines running around trying to blow away the good guys. Have all the crazy freaky things that made the game almost cause you to wet your pants. Nice going hollywood. <
> <
> <
>High points: <
> <
>1. Good action. The action is nicely done for the most part and keeps you entertained. I recommend the unedited version over the main one. More violence in it. <
> <
>2. Diverse characters. each character has their own little story to go along with them. You have of course Reaper, who i think of as the primary character in this movie, over the Rock; who has some serious issues with the scientist he's forced to bring along. <
> <
>3. Gory. I love gore, i love blood in movies. This one has lots of it. Nothing like the Hellraiser Series gore, but enough to make your eyes glow. <
> <
>4. **PLOT SPOILER** The Rock dies. That made it a good movie right there.

Poor Excuse for an Action Horror Movie
I will start out by saying I never played the Doom game, but I am always up for some good action mixed with horror. My perception and review of this movie will not be based on the game, because I know nothing about it except the premise. When I am in the mood for an action movie, I am not expecting Oscar-winning performances. If there is a good plot, believable actors and great special effects, I'm a happy camper. Well ? out of 3 is not so good. This movie is not an Aliens, Predator or Terminator. Hell, it's not even a Tomb Raider or Final Fantasy (both of which are better than this movie). <

>One thing I remember hearing about the Doom game was that it was a shot-`em-up with lots of monsters, action and creepiness. The beginning starts out promising in the lab, but goes down hill from there. After reading about the premise of the Doom game (gateway to Hell opened), I thought that sounded like a fantastic plot...not sure why Hollywood tends to rewrite winning formulas. Anyway, I thought the movie was shot almost in the dark. It was especially difficult to see what was happening during the first third of the movie. <
> <
>Another weird thing was the perspective in the movie changes about 2/3 of the way through. For about 20 minutes, when one of the main characters is injected with the 24th chromosome, you see what is happening on the screen only through his eyes (just like the trailer's I've seen for the Doom game). During this sequence he shoots at third rate "monsters"... most of them just stand there and wait for him to shoot them! This is drastically different than the rest of the movie and is really strange. The acting was fair. I thought the "Rock", the female scientist, the black guy protecting the female and the male pervert character did an okay job. They also throw in a moral dilemma near the end of the movie that seems to come out of left field. It doesn't even seem to gibe with how the Rock character has acted throughout the first part of the movie. <
> <
>When the guys were fighting the monsters it was so dark it was difficult to see the creatures. That was probably to cover up for poor production and sets and/or substandard creature creation. Some rooms they go in they turn on lights, the other rooms they never turn on lights. My final say: I was NEVER scared in this movie and that is saying a lot. I'm one of those people that watches scary movies through spread fingers over my face (don't laugh, it's a protection ritual). I never jumped, my heart didn't race, even the special effects didn't make me say wow. I kept waiting, but nothing exciting happened. Don't waste your money. I was just glad this was a Netflix pick.

Don`t waste your money
This is one of the worst movies I?ve ever seen. <
>It?s a shame there are just a few movies on HD DVD an Universal decides to release this title.
