Customer Reviews of Domain of Death
One of a kind! I don't want to bore everyone with a very long review of this album because I think that a lot of the previous reviews do a good job of doing that. What I want to do is explain why some people love this album and why some people hate it. I think it's very interesting to see that half the people rating this album either rate it a 5 or a 1. I completely understand why this is happening and this is my theory. Death metal is a very extreme form of music, and as a result people either love it or hate it. Mortician is at the very extreme end of death metal... making it even more difficult for most people to relate to or in other words... like. (even if they listen to other metal, ie. Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, etc.)
Mortician is not mainstream. Mortician is probably one of the most unique death metal bands there is. Being that unique and extreme, many, more main stream listeners will have trouble identifying with their sound... BUT....BUT.... I have to say that having listened to a lot of death metal, Mortician is in a class by themselves. They have probably the thickest, heaviest guitars I have ever heard. Yes... the singing is not like every other metal band out there. I see it as another instrument that compliments the music and sound they are trying to create.
There is a lot of bad or average death metal out there. Some people might not like... or should I say, might not be able to handle Mortician. But I think that Mortician (and this album in particular) stands above the rest with a brutal, thick, unique sound that sets it apart from the other non-descript death metal bands.
"Change it Butt-Head!"
Ok i must admit, I am not a brutal death metal fan, so bands like Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannible Corpse, Nile, and the like, I am indifferent with.
However, Moritician has got to be the worst brutal death metal band out there right now. At least with Morbid Angel and Cannible Corpse you get some great technical guitar work, and Trey from Morbid Angel is a decent song writer. Mortician should at least take some lessons from these guys.
Now to explain why I do not like these guys so much.
Number one. The vocals are simply horrid, even for a brutal death metal band, these vocals simply suck. They are so low, gutteral, and unintelligable that they sound like they are coming straight from a cave. Even with the lyric book you can't understand squat because you can get lost easily even if you look at the cd booklet.
The guitars are all but drowned out from the too heavy bass and horrible constant blast beating drums. What even makes the guitars sound worse is that they also sound muffled, as if being covered by a blanket.
The bass is too high, too loud, and sounds like one long constant strumming low e riff. And as I mentioned the constant blast beating drums get annoying, old, and even for a metal fan like me, a headache. They also do not always keep up to beat with the guitars and bass.
The lyrics are simply horrendous and seems like an eighth grader made them. The constant reference to old horror flicks, zombies, dismemberment, blood, guts, and gore is always fine and dandy to hear about, but WHEN ITS DONE RIGHT! These songs are too short, and just plain repeat themselves over and over again.
What it seems like to me is that Mortician just throws together a half assed studio recording to get out to the public so that they can TRY to make money off it because they know that fans of better brutal death metal bands like Morbid Angel and Cannible Corpse, will spend their hard earned money on it, expecting it to sound good.
The production is simply lousy, the song structures go nowhere and all sound the same, and these guys even sucked when I saw them live at Metal Fest.
Simply put, if you want good brutal death metal, check out Morbid Angel, especially their first album Alters of Madness, or Cannible Corpse, or even Deicide. Moritican just cannot measure up to bands like that.
Ouch..........what happened?
Relapse band "Mortician" had it going good there for awhile but I don't know what ... happened. This album totally [was bad]! If you listen to there old music and then compair it to there new music what do you notice? (Not much difference) But it seems like "Domain of Death" was put together to quick and cheap. Every song was horrible and needed to be re-adjusted.
"House by the Cemetery", and "Zombie Apocalypse" were excellent albums. But for some reason I think Will and Roger of Moritician lost something in this album.
Now in there new album "Darkest Day of Horror" they pick right back up on the right track and it is once again enjoyable to listen to.
I am not disrespecting Mortician I am just saying this CD needs to be put away in a place that no one will find it. Like 27 miles below the surface of the earth or thrown in the Atlantic ocean.
