Customer Reviews of Dog Soldiers
Move over American Werewolf in London I had the opportunity to see this flick on the big screen during a 24-hour horror movie marathon in October, and it was by far the gem of the lineup. Produced by Christopher Figg (of Hellraiser fame), this is the best werewolf movie I have seen since the days of American Werewolf in London and The Howling. A British-based film that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, the movie involves a band of soldiers practicing war games in the Scottish wilderness, only to come across a special ops agent and what remains of his team and camp. What follows is a brilliant piece of moviemaking that pits the soldiers against werewolves peppered with great acting, excellent one-liners and plot twists that will have you guessing throughout the film. It's definitely a "kick-butt" kind of film with non-stop action that had 300 people in the theater on the edge of their seats and howling for more. And if you like gore, there's plenty to go around.
Most of the cast is relatively unknowns, although viewers may recognize Sean Pertwee, who played in such films as Soldier and Event Horizon. Dog Soldiers comes through as a refreshing change to a genre that has seen its recent share of humdrum, repetitive horror films, lacking any style or creativity. I couldn't wait until this baby was released on DVD.
What Big Teeth You Have!
Bad werewolf movies are a dime a dozen. Remember Bad Moon? Any of the Howling sequels? By sheer comparison alone, this makes Dog Soldiers an unexpected treat.
This is a film made by a horror fan for horror fans. Much of the movie takes place at an isolated house in the woods (like Evil Dead) and involves a bunch of soldiers fighting off monsters (like Aliens or Predator). One of the characters is even named Bruce, a reference to Bruce Campbell. Even "The Matrix" is referenced in the movie, particularly in the last few scenes. And there's something about werewolves being in England... I just don't know, it's always money.
The movie is very fast-paced and only slows down for some crucial plot points and minimal character development. I liked all the characters and the actors do a fine job of portraying them. However, I felt at first that everyone looked a lot alike and could only tell them apart once they started getting eaten, one by one.
The werewolves don't look particularly realistic, but that didn't bother me. I guess I got used to it, and they still looked better than any CGI (i.e. An American Werewolf in Paris) I've ever seen. There is some moderate gore in the film, including lots of limbs being hacked off, and a decapitation. Probably not enough to satiate those perverse gore-hounds out there, but maybe too much for your grandma (or a girlfriend who acts like your grandma).
This is a very fun film for horror fans looking for a good, exciting werewolf movie.
"Dog Soldiers" will grab you by the throat
This is one helluva good little movie.A group of British soldiers in the Scottish Highlands fight off a pack of wolfmen while hold up in an old cottage.Great suspense and terrific action abound in this low budget jewel while the soldiers try to survive until daylight. Its really good to see a film work with downhome special effects to make a good movie as opposed to those computer generated Hollywood slick looking movies. The wolves are believable as hell and the gore is really....well.... very gory.Intestines are ripped out and meat is eaten when the pack makes a kill and they make quite a few.
This is the first werewolf movie Ive seen that made the wolves look real and act scary.Face it , the werewolves reputation suffered at the hands of David Naughton and Jason Bateman so its really hard to make a movie where werewolves really come across scary .In this movie they do.
Just about everything is perfect in this little movie--a secluded cottage and the misty Scottish weather and the gloom of the woods and the impending nightfall all add up to a great setting for this man vs werewolf fight for survival.
If you like horror then see this movie ,it will put those big budget slick Hollywood pieces of crap you usually watch to shame.
