Discovery isn't one of the Electric Light Orchestra's strongest albums, but it is more than redeemed by the inclusion of what is perhaps their greatest single, the massive "Don't Bring Me Down." "Shine a Little Love" and "Confusion" are also classic ELO tracks in which synths, guitars, and orchestration merge into a finely crafted whole. Unfortunately, the Beatles pastiche of "The Diary of Horace Wimp" and the overly sentimental "Last Train to London" show that, for this world-conquering band, time was about to run out. This remastered edition of the 1979 LP includes three extra tracks, including a take on Del Shannon's "Little Town Flirt." --Robert Burrow

Customer Reviews of Discovery

What happened?
One listen to this album and it is apparent that Jeff Lynne and ELO were running out of steam by 1979. Not that the sales were disappointing. DISCOVERY has the distinction of being the only ELO album to spawn two TOP 10 singles, "Shine a Little Love" and "Don't Bring Me Down." The first of these was a blatant attempt at garnering a diso hit before the fad faded and is saved only by a pretty cool bass line. The latter is the biggest hit ELO ever had...a solid rocker that would have been better with a little less polish, but still real good.

The other tracks are really uneven. "Confusion" (which almost sounds like a Roy Orbison song) comes close to being a good track, but the production makes it sound childish. "Need Her Love" and "Wishin'" come close, but kinda limp along. "On the Run" is forgettable. The less said about "Horace Wimp," "Midnight Blue," and "Last Train to London," the better.

Altogether, DISCOVERY (along with 1980s XANADU soundtrack) marks the low point for ELO artistically.

ELO's Brilliance
Read the reviews up above and then this one and you'll get an ida of why ELO is brilliant.

They mean a thousand different things to a thousand different people.

While some one else might think Horace Wimp is "horrid" songwriting, I think it's an absolutely brilliant example of Jeff Lynne's reverence and appreciation for the Beatles and Absurdist Brit humor.

Ironically, "Don't Bring me Down" the biggest "hit" on the record, is probably my least favorite on this albumn.

Although catchy at first, It's repetative and boring to me. The song has a short relistenability lifespan.

Other songs like "I need her love" and "last train to london" remain fun and interesting years after you first hear them.

If ELO bridges Pop and Prog (and many suggest that it does) Discovery is certainly more to the Pop side (while the next albumn, Time, leans more to the prog side).

Personally I feel as though this stretch of time between out of the blue through time (including the xanadu soundtrack songs) are the most interesting and exciting period of Jeff Lynne and ELO's catalog.

If you liked out of the blue or new world record, don't hesitate to get either discovery or xanadu (but never rent the movie because it's god awful... unless your into god awful, in which case, cheers!).

If you want a real treat that will challenge you and open you up to a world of beautifully brilliant intelligent yet poppy while simultaneously progressive sounding music, I suggest you look into TIME.

From a musical standpoint, Time is groundbreaking in it's production and it's conception. The problem is that no one noticed it at the time because it's also ve fun (and since Pink Floyd's "The Wall" was dominating charts at the time, fun wasn't exactly what folks were listening to in the post punk pop world.

But don't snub discovery either. It's a blast you won't regret (or at least shouldn't regret!)

The Best Album...Ever
Yes folks, you heard me. Up too this point, all of my reviews have been 5-star albums (Although, I am waiting for my 3-Star Nirvana review to be posted) - but this, indeed, is the best album ever created (so far). This is first on Mr. Musics Top 5 Favorite Albums. Even number two, Sublimes '40oz. To Freedom' doesn't match up too this. And I will explain why this is so uber brilliant. Technical ecstacy is abundance here. From various electronic shock of a synth, too the mind blowing brilliance of a full-fledged orchestra - this is it. We have electronic synths, Orchestras, Disco beats - all topped off with psychadelic 70's rock on roll. Imagine Kiss playing too the beat of staying alive while the Sanfrancisco Orchestra backs them up. All the tracks here are excelllent, every single one. Not one filler. However, the first four tracks would have to be the best out of them. The first track, 'Shine A Little Love' - has a galloping hard rock riff, and is extremley catchy. Good work by the Orchestra. Confusion has a vintage 70's feel with computer blurts here and there. I Need Your Love is guitarist brilliance, with excellent solos and this is an allaround classic ballad. The Diary of Horace Wimp is interesting power pop. Don't Bring Me Down is the biggest song of here, and although not the best - is still very, very good. But seriously folks, all the tracks are great rock and roll with a bit of disco soul and a electronic orchestra backing. It is all great. Everything. Too bad ELO Really went downhill from here. But this folks has to be the best album to date.
