Customer Reviews of Discovery: Emerging and Celebrated Repertoire for Solo Saxophone and Symphonic Band
Awful I bought this because of the Bolcom Concert Suite, but shouldn't have bought it. This recording is awful! Bolcom calls this piece a "High wire act for saxophone", yet the altissimo is awful, inaccurate, and even taken down an octave. It's as easy as this, if you can't play altissimo, then you can't play this piece. Along with horrible altissimo, the rest of the piece has wrong notes, lack of expression. I can't get over that they are selling this! I would really like my money back. If you are interested in the Bolcom, check out Timothy McAllister's recording, much much better, worth the money, correct notes, and nice altissimo. I read a review before I bought it saying it wasn't that great, but I didn't believe them, and thought one more recording of the piece would be nice...I was wrong, take my advice
Questionable
This is a commendable compilation. It is nice to see saxophonists attempt to present the highest quality works possible. This however is far from the best recordings available of these works. The Bolcom concerto is new and exciting, but the performance is quite inaccurate and the soloist struggles with altissimo, projection and intonation. Everything else is rather standard, but not nearly as celebrated as the Dahl concerto. The band has some strengths but exhibits typical problems for college-aged students.
No Creston? No Husa? No Whitney?
It's unfortunate that this album is billed as a "definitive" recording of standard works for saxophone and band when it only includes one real "standard" (the Dahl concerto). Why didn't he perform the Creston Concerto, which is certainly a fundamental part of the repertoire? There are many gaps in the program...
