Customer Reviews of Discover
Beyond Doubt, This Album's a Keeper. It took me a long time to realize what a treasure Discover is. From my own unique viewpoint, GLJ is a group that has to be listened to a few times before they click--especially where Michael Aston's explorative songwriting approach is concerned. Their vocals and overall sound are so different that they can't be written off in just one hearing. I went from completely detesting this disc to playing it mercilessly and adding to my collection of the band's catalogue.
18 years after Discover's release, there is only a hint of datedness about the material. The individuality and freshness of each song keeps it from becoming just another soundtrack for people who still watch Molly Ringwald movies.
The group has often been referred to as "goth," but I have never looked at them that way. In fact, I would say they possess cross elements of goth, pop, classic rock, and alternative; Discover drives my point home without much debate. Gary Lyons did a beautiful job producing the album, helping the band to move forward into a more commercially accessible direction than they'd started out. You can play Discover on any old piece of crap, and the production never seems to be less clear or impressive. Michael and Jay Aston were really amazing together vocally, and James Stevenson's guitar work matches their energetic passion. Pete Rizzo and Marcus Gilvear also add a tight rhythm section which contributes to making every track sound nice and tight.
Every song on here is fantastic, but my favorites are: "Heartache"--nice and mellowdramatic relationship torment.
"Over the Rooftops"--everything about it is right, particularly those soaring vocals and James Stevenson's fluid riffs.
My personal favorite is "Kick," one of the best songs Jay has ever written. It's sweetness and poppy melody are totally infectious.
"Beyond Doubt" is a provocative mood tune.
"Sweetest Thing" is a good (for that era) new wave/pop song with nice use of harmonies and something you could see yourself singing to as it blasts out your auto speakers.
"Maid of Sker" is definitely a dark and moody piece that's more representative of art rock and takes a few plays to get used to.
Those are my favorite tracks, but there isn't a bad or predictably boring cut on here. If you haven't bought Discover, I suggest you get a copy now. Jay's poppier inclinations and Michael's more experimental nature fused together well here. It shows GLJ at a very nearly perfect and cohesive point in their career and, sadly, the last one before the feud began. It's a true masterpiece.
A lovely record!
A must have album! All of Michael's songs are wonderful, as usual!!
Jay's...well that's better left unsaid.

To be quite honest, I haven't heard this album in years. However my reaction to it is still quite clear: this is alterna-disco PAP which sacrificed whatever GOTH potential they previously displayed. To say the least, I was less than thrilled with it. I'd just like to say that "Immigrant" is by far the best stuff I've heard from this band and the album should be re-released. It not only rocks, it has unique songs with unusual qualities, most notable of course are the bizarre vocals of the Aston twins. Taking the direction of the simplistic and under-developed "Promise," "Immagrant" was one of the more unusual and cool-sounding records from my old 1980's lp collection. Everything else I've heard from GLJ (about 50% of what's left) has made me want to toss my lunch.
Hope this helped someone. Bring back Immigrant!!!
