Customer Reviews of Dirt Devil Jaguar Carpet Shampooer - MCE6605

Great starter, slow finisher
If I had written a review after my first month of using this machine, it would have been 5 stars. It cleaned dried-in vomit from my son's carpet with little work in its first use. It made all of my carpets very clean - and I have six boys, ages 10 and under. It even cleaned up the leaky sippy cup stains in the toddler's bedroom. However, after about 6 months (probably only 5 uses), I started to notice strange problems - first, the hose wouldn't spray water. A month or two later, it started spraying water out the sides of the base. Then, it would not suck water up unless I stood one foot on the base of the unit (at the front), while trying to push it over my carpet. Not exactly comfortable. Finally, around 11 months, it started spraying water continually (and keep in mind that the soap & water do not have separate tanks in this model), whether I was pulling the trigger or not. It also started smelling like mildew, no matter how well I cleaned its discharge tank and its filter. My whole coat closet smelled after that. I did call after the initial problems to see if I could get it fixed, as it was under warranty, and if I wanted to drive it to the nearest authorized repair center 40 miles away, that may have cleared up my issues, but I don't go that way often enough, so it was my loss. I think this unit is more worthwhile than renting the Rug Doctor from the hardware store, and did do a better job cleaning enough times to make it cost less in the long run, but now I am going to spend the extra $50 on the more expensive Dirt Devil model and see how it works - if the rotating brushes are that much better than the stationary ones on this model, I have something to really look forward to!

Five rows of rotating brushes? That's baloney!
I really wouldn't have any complaints about this unit, except for the fact that both amazon.com and target.com (the listings on the two websites are related) flat-out state the untruth that this unit has five rows of rotating brushes. And if it had those, I'd probably be fairly happy with the unit. <
> <
>But, as it turns out, there's an approximately trapezoidal black plastic plate inlaid with five rows of tufted bristles. And rotate they do not. That brush plate is a stationary as stationary can get. You can remove it for cleaning the bristles, but that's all. <
> <
>As I said, therein lies the problem. The only brushing action that happens with this unit is when you physical push it back and forth while cleaning, and that's not enough. If you have some particularly dirty areas of carpeting, to get those clean at all, you have to keep pushing the unit back and forth, each time releasing more hot water mixed with cleaning solution with the trigger. Eventually, those areas will get way too wet, beyond the unit's capability of sucking out the water. <
> <
>That said, it did get my carpets pretty clean, except for one very high traffic area right outside my kitchen. That ended up way cleaner than it was, but not quite clean enough. <
> <
>When I was through, my back was killing me and my right shoulder was in pain from all the repetitive back and forth going on. A unit with some kind of revolving brush cylinder, or one of those with five round brushes side by side that rotate horizontally would have done the scrubbing work much more effectively. I mean, really, the silly thing has an electric motor, so why am I doing the repetitive scrubbing and not the machine? <
> <
>Similarly, the hand tool has a stationary brush whereas some other units have rotating brushes. I haven't used that tool yet, but clearly, you'd have to move it back and forth to scrub the pile of the carpet or upholstery. <
> <
>My one other complaint is that the handle has a seam on the right side that forms a ridge. I'm glad I stopped when I did, because that ridge was causing a blister on the heel of my hand since every time I pushed the unit back and forth, it was rubbing there. The ridge at the seam needs to be sanded down. <
> <
>As to capacity, no complaints. If the unit held more than one gallon of solution, it would be too heavy to maneuver. I'd rather have to refill and empty it a few more times than have it be heavier. <
> <
>It was easy enough to remove and replace the tank and to fill it -- that wasn't hard to figure out. <
> <
>The dirty water tank isn't that hard to remove, either, once I'd figured out how it sat on the unit. <
> <
>I have to say it was better at extracting water from the carpet than I thought it would be and only those sopping wet areas that required way too much back and forth took too long to dry. Fortunately we had a one-day heat wave the day after I cleaned the carpets and that helped them dry out. <
> <
>This unit is going back for a refund due to false advertising claims by the seller. I notified both amazon.com and target.com that their claims are false, but, so far, they've done nothing to correct the falsehood, so please be warned. <
> <
>If you buy this unit expect revolving brushes to scrub the carpets for you, you will be sadly disappointed.

Here is the deal with this thing..
First time you use it.. it works great.. second time it sucks a bit less water, until about the 30th time, it literally does not suck up any water at all. Here is the problem. There is a black sponge filter between the water tank and the vacuum. I have no idea how air passes through this filter, but in design its supposed to. I dont know why but after a couple uses this filter becomes clogged, I have washed this filter and its original state is not restored (it still does not let air pass though). I removed the filter all together and I sucked up more water in the first minute than I got from doing the entire room with the filter in. <
> <
>What I suggest is this. Take the filter out, and at the same time move vacuum slowly (so water does not splash much) I would change the water before its fills to the limit. After finished, I would remove the container and run the vacuum for second to dry out any water that got into the vacuum. <
> <
>I gave this thing 3 stars, but the bottom line is it works great if only air could get past the filter/sponge.
