Despite inadequate sound and backward balances, this live 1937 Salzburg Meistersinger is important in that it is the only complete Wagner opera we have under Arturo Toscanini's leadership. The tight-knit ensemble, effortless transitions, and dramatic breadth can be divined by those who are willing to get past the sonic limitations, to say nothing of Grammofono's superfluous though well-meaning reprocessing. --Jed Distler
