The millions of gamers who fought their way through the horror of Tristram's catacombs in the original Diablo realized that all was not well after their hero destroyed the demon's physical body. Diablo II opens with a vivid animated vision of that mad, doomed hero, who unwittingly spreads chaos as he moves toward a fate of Diablo's choosing. With the original character classes gone, players choose from a new cadre of champions: the Barbarian (can wield two two-handed swords at once, one in each hand), the Necromancer (raises the dead to fight his battles), the Amazon (master of bow and spear), Paladin (holy crusader), and Sorceress (wielder of elemental magic). These warriors follow a diabolical plot through four acts, and each act is roughly as big as the original Diablo.
Diablo II looks and behaves very much like Diablo. Players are assigned quests by nonplayer characters and adventure through dark catacombs and crypts. Hordes of vile monsters assail the hero, who survives by force of arms, powerful spells, and through the use of varied and exotic magic items. Randomly generated dungeons guarantee fresh adventure each time a new game is started. But unlike the original game, characters must fight their way through the above-ground wilderness before entering a dungeon. Fortunately, some of the frustrations of adventuring have been lessened in Diablo II, thanks to the new ability to run and the clever implementation of "waypoints" that let your character quickly travel to and from the safety of town.
Along with the new character classes comes a new character skill system. As in the original game, players improve their character's ability scores as they kill monsters and gain experience. But unlike the original game, players get to add specific skills, spells, and powers each time they advance. For example, after gaining a level you could choose between taking a skill that improves your attack speed or a skill that allows you to scatter your foes with a mighty shout. With this customized advancement system it is unlikely that two high-level characters, even characters of the same class, will be alike. Instead of progressing along a set path, you can choose skills and powers that complement your own particular playing style. Interestingly, this new customizable class system closely parallels the changes made in the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons.
Other enhancements include a method for creating and customizing magic items, 3-D accelerated spell effects, anticheat multiplayer code, and a place to safely store excess money and equipment. But even without these tweaks, even without the sophisticated story line and all the cool new features, Diablo II is just a great game. The sound, music, and graphics combine to create a tantalizingly eerie setting. Players will willingly let their game-playing hours slip well past reasonable bedtimes, suffering bleary-eyed classes and meetings in exchange for "just one more" magic item, dungeon level, or character skill.

Mindless The game is a giant step sideways in every area possible. The graphics support only 640 X 480 resolution which will leave you feeling more like you've transported to 1991 than 1491. The spell system has been entirely revamped, replacing the hunt for spell books with preset, character specific skill trees that your "hero" traverses as he/she gains in levels. A nice idea, but one ultimetly rendered useless when the strategy of the player (or lack there of) only calls for melee combat skills, effectivelly rendering both caster classes more of a defensive liability than a subset rich in magical ability.
The sheer stupidity of the gameplay also reduces the 3 "hack em up" classes (Amazon, Barbarian, Paladin) to the role of "Diablo I's warrior with a more varied wardrobe." All of the promised additions to this game that would have created any sembelance of an "online community" have been removed, most notably dedicated guild halls, with guild shared storage space.
Honestly this game is basically diablo I with 3 warrior classes as opposed to 1. The original was by no means an exercize in cognitive ability, but it had a simplistic charm and was alot of fun. Four years to improve upon the initial design has resulted in absolutely no new ground being broken. The simplicity is highlighted ironically by one of the selling points, which is of course how large the sequel's playing field is (4 towns, four acts with many areas). When all you can do is click on hostile blobs, hundreds and hundreds of times to reach the next collection of slighly larger, but equally dumb blobs, you'll long for the days of 16 smaller levels.
If you want to make the same mistake and pay 50 bucks to play Diablo I stretched out over an enormous playing field then be my guest. Personally I'd wait a year and pick up a copy from a bargin bin for $19.99

Great Game! This game has so many different weapons, armor, and skills that everytime you play its a new game. With the addition of socketed weapons, shields, and helms you can get different gems that alter the items abilities. 1-4 poisen damage, 4-16 cold damage, 3-6 fire damage, 2-8 lighting damage. Those are just the weapons, the shields and helms alter dextarity, strength, vitality, and stamina. Plus damage rating, and defense rating. Depending on what gems you get you can totally customize your character, not to mention all new magic items and unque items. The landscape is huge. Where as in diablo the whole game basiclly took place under ground, in Diablo 2 most of it takes place above ground. 5 New player classes. Amazon warrior, Necromancer, Barbarian, soceress, and Paladin. Each of these different player class has its own skill tree. Skills that you can learn with every new level. Combat skills, War Cries, Combat Masteries, Curses, Offensive Auras, Defensive Auras. The game is absolutly worth buying.
One simple Flaw killed it......
This game would have been a MASTERPIECE, had it have not been for the stupidity of blizzard. This game WOULD be extremely fun, but there is one flaw, and this one flaw ruins how much I enjoyed the game: The damn saving option. This really pissed me off. After a hard 3 hours straight of battling, you find out you have to run off to work, so you save and quit the game. After a hard 8 hours of work, you look forward to playin the pretty fun game of Diablo 2 once again. you pop the Cd in the drive, start up the game....WHAT THE HELL?? I JUST BEAT ALL THESE ENEMIES! yes that is right. After you save and quit, the enemies return. sure, its a good way to earn experience, but i think it goes a little too far when you have to defeat about 200 enemies and spend about an hour JUST to get back to where you left off on your last play. At first it's not that bad, mainly because the enemies are not that hard, and there are not many of them. but once i got to the third act, i got so frustrated i just quit the game and didnt play it for a month. This gets so frustrating and time-consuming it is unreal.
I loved the first Diablo, and right after i beat it i went out and bough diablo 2 with an expansion pack RIGHT AWAY, expecting this FANTASTIC game, and all i got was a 3 hour excitement from the first 2 acts. Now, i am going to auction it off of ebay as quick as possible, as the sight of the box i have reminds me of the mistake i made of spending a total of 40 dollars on such crap
