Deus Ex's real achievement is that players are free to complete missions as they see fit. As the game progresses you can upgrade your character with a variety of bioenhancements that dramatically impact gameplay. Focus on your combat skills and you'll be the Terminator by the end of the game. Upgrade your computer know-how and you'll be the equivalent of Data from Star Trek: TNG, busting into computer and security networks with ease. We were expecting a game that let us role-play a little, opting for a brute-force approach or one that required a little more stealth, but we had no idea the designers would do such a fine job of pulling it off. The experiences of both methods are unusual enough that we found ourselves revisiting level to try different tactics.
The individual components of Deus Ex--like the targeting system, inventory controls, and enemy viewing radiuses--are a little clunky when viewed individually, but they converge into an overall game that is much greater than the sum of its parts. It's easy to compare the game to titles that obviously influenced it (Thief, System Shock, and Rainbow Six immediately come to mind), but Deus Ex really stands on its own as a unique title that should appeal equally to action games, adventure lovers, and role-playing fanatics. It's just too bad players without a Voodoo card will have a hard time getting playable frame rates, since the game uses the Direct3D-unfriendly Unreal engine. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- Several ways to complete each mission, and all are equally fun
- Game world is highly interactive, and exploration is rewarded
- Ability to tailor a character to match your gameplay style is a huge plus
- Doesn't run well on non-Voodoo video cards since the game is optimized for Glide 3-D rendering
- Most of the voice acting is bad
- Enemies aren't very smart

Customer Reviews of Deus Ex
a landmark for FPS and RPG games Just to start off, Deus Ex is not for anybody who doesn't like huge complex plots, government cospericies, and exciting adventure gameplay with lots of action. If you do like all of those things, (which you should) come on in to the world of Deus Ex. It has a lot to offer.
Deus Ex puts you in the shoes of J.C. Denton, a recently employed nano-tech agent (sort of half machine and half man) who works for UNATCO (United Nations Anti Terroism Coalition) In recent events, a deadly plauge raviges the major cities, and millions are dying. A rouge band of people, the NSF, are hijacking shipments of the antidote. IT is your job to stop them. But you soon find out that the NSF may have a very good cause, and your brother, Paul Denton, (another UNATCO agent) may be in grave danger from UNATCO, and a bunch of people who are persumed innocent might be very bad and powerful.
I can't really tell you much more about the story without giving things away, but I can tell you that Deus Ex will definetly please you. The game evolves in to a huge, complex plot with three different endings. There is a lot of stealth, action, suspense, and betrayal in a huge gameworld where doing certain things will lead you in to different sub-plots of intrigue and secrets about the darkest conspericies...
All in all
PROS: Huge gameworld; replayable; very good plot; good characters; you get to choose between stealth and action; an epic quality throuout
CONS: Slowdowns; may be too long and tedious for some
BOTTOM LINE: Go buy this game and play it. That's all.
One of the Greatest
I am going to avoid simple praise and tell you what makes this game great. It's based in a surreal premise of real life conspiracies that draws you deeply into its awesome storyline. The first person action/roleplaying system is great and you'll rarely feel hindered by your weapon choices. The action may be a little slow but the great controls make up for it. Never will you reach a point in the game that you can not pass. If you do, it is because you are not looking hard enough. There are vents, shafts, keypads, and doors begging to be picked all around allowing you to make your decision and follow -your- path. All sorts of weapons and ammo are available. You can have a hand crossbow but various ammo make it an indispensable tool! Flare, sleeping, arrow darts are at your disposal. Weapons are also customizable allowing you to make your full automatic machine gun have a scope or perhaps a silencer. If you like roleplaying or action games this is for you. You will never forget sneaking into an enemy mob compound to steal a dragon laser sword for an allied triad to turn the tides of a clan war.
-Keep gaming!
Yes it will run on XP
Download the demo on download.com and give it a try first.
I tried the demo with a bit of skepticism but I was pleasantly suprised. Though I have been out of the gaming scene for about five years, I was sad to not be able to have a joystick in my hands -- too much fumbling around the keyboard during critical moments.
Anyway, I bought the game on ebay for under two bucks.
