Customer Reviews of Desire & Hell at Sunset Motel
A noir like no other! This film has one of the most intriguing, sensuous opening sequences I've seen: An ultra-sultry Sherilyn Fenn taking her sweet old time getting out of a cab as the camera lingers lovingly on her from different angles. Very effective. If nothing else, the movie would be worth watching just for Fenn alone. Her uncanny resemblance to Elizabeth Taylor (so much so that she even played La Liz in "The Liz Taylor Story"!) and vixenlike felineness mixed with vulnerable kooky wistfulness make it unclear why never made it huge. Apart from Fenn, the complex plot of a couple who have come up with an ingenious way to rid themselves of a pesky blackmailer could stand on its own any day. The rest of the cast which includes, among others, Whip Hubley as the seemingly callous husband and David Johanssen as a blackmailer with more than just money on his mind make this a different kind of treat from your usual deadly-serious film noirs. On top of that, the opening and closing music (they use the same for both) is excellent, consisting of a sultry, languid jazzy tune I wish I could find to listen to over and over again!
Hilarious, dark, twisted, and beautiful
Alternating between hilarious and suspenseful, Desire & Hell at Sunset Motel is a compulsively watchable film with a complex plot -- THE USUAL SUSPECTS meets THE HONEYMOONERS. Full of great lines and strange characters, it brings ordinary people -- a salesman husband, a wife who just wants to go to Disneyland -- into a world of amnesia, double-crosses, and sensual temptation. The 1950s details are flawless, and the film's rich visual texture keeps you watching. The plot's complexities are resolved in a stunning surprise ending.
If you liked BLUE VELVET, EATING RAOUL, or almost any movie by David Cronenburg, you'll enjoy this film.
