Customer Reviews of Denied
Actors stand out from a foggy production What really surprised me was the acting, especially Lee Rhumohr. The scenes in which an offscreen character speaks to him and he has to register his responses only in his face are excellent. Almost as good as Sean Connery's scene with an offscreen Christian Slater in The Name of the Rose. He expresses a variety of feelings clearly and naturally without exaggeration or artifice. Very good acting, specially for someone who might be tempted to let his good looks carry him. Matt Austin as Merrick is often a good match for him. The plot is a reversal of the gay trope of unrequited love between a narcissistic jock and a sensitive nerd. But these two guys gave it the ring of truth. This movie is no technical marvel, as others have noted, but I began to suspect that the darkness, fogginess, bad lighting and cramped, soulless and sterile sets served rather well both to focus attention on the actors and to support the emotional tone of the plot.
Take a risk . . . try this film on for size
Take a bit of a risk and try this film. I grew up in a small town and now live in an even smaller town, so I can vouch for the validity of the story line and indeed of the characters themselves. OK, to be sure "Denied" suffers from many of the deficiencies inherent in most low-budget films (e.g., weak editing, tinny sound, marginal cinematography, confusing dialogue, etc.), but having said all that I found the story entirely believable and the acting of the two male leads quite good.

>Why a 4-star rating? First, I like to encourage others to watch small-budget independent films. And beyond that the two leads are quite good. Lee Rhumohr (also spelled on the Web as Lee Rumohr), playing "Merrick" is strikingly handsome (the cameraman loves to capture his pensive gaze and the director loves to pose him as if he were selling underwear). [By the way, I think Mr. Rhumohr (sic?) was one of the two security guards killed in the opening sequence of Jamie Foxx's "Bait."] The fellow who plays the stoner buddy "Troy" is convincing; he has the requisite charm to snare Merrick . . . and all the girls as well. It's a film about unrequited love . . . and who ain't been there.

>This studio also put out "2 x 4" and the above goes ditto for that film.
Insult to Injury
Bad sound, bad dialogue, contrived acting all around. "Denied" DVD case states "Special DVD features include: outttakes, trailer, cast interviews and subtitles in English and Spanish." However, no English/Spanish subtitles, nor cast interviews, nor movie trailer are to be found anywhere on the disk.
