Late 70's TV film. In the mid 70's, "The Last of Mohicans" was turned into a made for TV movie with Steve Forrest as "Hawkeye" and Ned Romero as "Chingachgook." It must have done tolerably well in the ratings because this sequel was quickly churned out with Forrest and Romero reprising their roles. Treating James Fenimore Cooper's prequel to "The Last of the Mohicans" as a sequel, "The Deerslayer" starts with Chingachgook mourning over the grave of Uncus. If you don't know why Uncus is dead this movie shows a flashback of the "The Last of the Mohicans'" finale to explain what happened.
The story of "The Deerslayer" revolves around an evil Huron war captain capturing a Delaware princess and Hawkeye and Chingachgook's attempts to rescue her. Their pursuit brings them into contact with a greenhorn English officer, conniving frontiersmen Harry March, and an ex-pirate and his two "daughters." (Fans of the 1992 version of "The Last of the Mohicans" will be pleased to a see a very young and very beautiful Madeliene Stowe in the role of one of the ex-pirate's daughters. And for people who think Ms. Stowe is a bad actress they will discover that she has vastly improved since the late 70's.)
This was a TV film and thus suffers serious budget constraints. Do not expect any epic battle scenes or authentic looking costumes and sets. However, if one can overlook its low budget "The Deerslayer" is a fairly entertaining made for TV movie.
