Customer Reviews of Debussy: Images I & II; Children's Corner; Préludes
Father of American music In my opinion, Claude Debussy is the father of American music. In this review I'm referring to his piano music from about 1903 to 1907. Most popular classical music written by American composers that is upheld in America, was not written by composers who came from the "traditional classical period" of Europe. Rather as our own history and culture begins about 100 years ago with classical and jazz compositions, Debussy brand of world music (European, Asian and African influences) was right on time for the American society to relate to. And hence, American music was founded through these diversities and Debussy was the famous composer of the time who our composers looked to.
Debussy's main influences for his piano music between 1903 and 1907 (his best works) are influenced by French society composers (Chopin, late Litz, neither French in heritage but rather in spirit), Asian music (in particular pentatonic "sounding" gamelan music - which would later influences jazz and the blues scale), Gregorian Chants (for it's plaintive style, modal and tonic gravity) and African music (for it's meditative rhythms).
The CD represents some of Debussy's best competitions, only leaving some obscure solo pieces and an earlier book of "Images' sometimes referred to as "oubliees". There is an excellent recording on the Nonesuch label with this great "forgotten" work performed by Paul Jacobs. I should also mention that many consider Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli to be perhaps the greatest Debussy interpreter.
Listen and you will hear. May the academia in our country recognize!
