Customer Reviews of Death Row Uncut
Death Row Uncut Death Row Uncut takes a look at the history of Death Row Records, which featured artists such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound (Daz & Kurupt), 2Pac, Lady of Rage, Nate Dogg, OFTB, The Outlawz, Danny Boy, and the list goes on. This DVD features artist videos including some unreleased versions, live performances, and behind the scenes footage from the artists' days on the Row. Definitely worth checking out if you like any of the Death Row artists particularly 2Pac and Tha Dogg Pound.
Classic footage and videos, brings back golden memories.
With the once-powerful Death Row Records having more or less dropped out of sight in the past few years, it was basically improbable that a video such as this would never be released, so sure enough 'Death Row Uncut' is put out just when the label and its incarcerated CEO Suge Knight's infamy is soaring to nose-bleeding heights. This album brings back the violent world of the early and mid-'90s West Coast rap scene in true and unbrideled form, and anyone that was a fan of the ghetto gangsta lifestyle they glorified or the head-bobbing lowrider G-Funk that it originated should be dying to get their hands on this video. It contains not only a virtual timeline of all the top artists' videos, but some priceless behind-the-scenes footage, home video recordings, some serious real gangsta stuff here, and rare live performances, most notably of tha Dogg Pound and 2Pac. All the songs on here are excellent (except for MAYBE the Lady of Rage's 'Afro Puffs', which I'm not too crazy about) and it even has a few never-before-seen X-rated versions of 2Pac's 'How Do U Want It?', DJ Quik's 'Mo P---y', and Daz Dillinger and Kurupt's 'Because of You Girl'. Spotty, but interesting to watch. One of my favorite parts, is on the set of the 'Toss It Up' video in between takes in which Suge, 2Pac, K-Ci and JoJo, and many others, are cohorting, laughing, making jokes, all of them as drunk and high as could be. It is fun to see all of them together, being friends, smiling, particularly Pac. The last half of this video has some touching and intimate moments with the late rapper, the best of which is him performing 'Dear Mama' at the crowded Death Row Mother's Day dinner at the Bevery Hills Ritz Hotel. The way he introduces the song is touching and heartfelt, something every fan or non-fan should see. Also, it's true, most of the videos are the edited versions, but that is simply because those were initially filmed without cursing anyways. The ones that were filmed both ways, like Dr. Dre and Ice Cube's 'Natural Born Killaz', are featured unedited here. And, yes, the video does takes some cold shots at Dre and Snoop. But rightfully so. I mean, look, if you had practically made somebody's career, looked out for them wherever an' whenever, then even laid down millions of dollars to provide them with the best defense attornies possible, and just when the time came that you needed them most, they turned their backs on you, how would YOU feel? Man, I'd be livid. Hell yes, this video is worth your hard-earned loot, but why did I give it 4 stars? I would have really loved to see some of the earlier 2Pac videos on here, particularly 'Trapped' and 'Brenda's Got a Baby', even though they were before he signed with Death Row, and I'm sure his mother has the rightful ownership of them anyways. But still this is well-worth your money and time. Fans of Death Row won't be disappointed at all.
Death Row: Uncut REVIEW
"Death Row: Uncut" had the potentiol to be an amazing collection of classic videos, never-before-seen interviews, and live concert footage. While it does have all of these things, it also spends an annoying and pointless amount of time trying to drag all of its former artsits' names through the mud. Following four unnamed men in a car as they comment on a number of videos, "Uncut" takes what could have been an amazing concept and more or less urinates all over it. Our four narrators comment on every Dre video by informing us that addition to the fact that "Suge made that nigga" that he is in fact, a homsexual. If that isn't enough, they actually hire transvestite actors for a sketch in which they pretend to be Dre's lovers and pull out a certificate stating that the Doctor has been diagnosed with HIV. One of them even goes as far to say that late rapper, Eazy-E "probably got AIDS from him [Dre]". Pretty tasteless. The group also has some less than flattering things to say about Snoop Dogg, DJ Quik, and Nate Dogg to name a few. They also give detailed directions to the homes of Dre, Snoop, and Jimmy Iovine. The footage of Tupac Shakur is probably worth the price of admission on its own. You get a lot of his best videos plus some great concert footage and some behind-the-scenes stuff of him on the set of two videos, "Made Niggaz" and "Toss It Up". Another important thing to mention is that despite its title, all of the videos are not shown in their full time frame. Some of them, like Tha Dogg Pound's "New York, New York", are cut short less than a minute into them and a few of the videos advertised on the package aren't even in it. If only they had taken less time trying to bring down the careers of people who helped make their label what it is today, they might have room to show the full videos. All in all, this should be a worthwhile purchase for any past or present Death Row fan though all of the time dedicated to showing their bitter side is unneccesarry.
