Customer Reviews of Daydream Believers - The Monkees Story
A Daydream of a DVD I've been a fan of this movie since it was originally broadcast on VH1 in June, 2000. When I heard it was being released on DVD, I couldn't believe it! Even though I've watched my own videotaped copy of the film many times, I knew I'd buy the DVD. Having viewed the entire package of goodies by now, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to any fan of the Monkees, as well as to fans of the movie and the actors who portrayed the Monkees (Aaron Lohr (Micky), L.B. Fisher (Peter), George Stanchev (Davy), and Jeff Geddis (Mike)). These four young men meshed together remarkably well as a dramatic team, and truly recreated the "Monkee magic".
If you've never seen this movie and are a Monkees fan, don't miss it. It recaptures the fun and energy of the original Monkees tv show, and does a credible job of portraying the artistic conflicts that caused much internal discord between the Monkees, and led them to the decision to strike out on their own as a band and reject the creative control of music hit-maker Don Kirschner.
The inclusion on the DVD of commentary by the REAL Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, Davy Jones, and director Neill Fearnley adds incredible energy to the experience of watching the film. And if you have favorite scenes you like to revisit, there is a scene index that makes finding that special favorite highlight a breeze. I would have bought the DVD for the scene index alone. Hey, hey, it's worth it! My only caveat about the film is that they removed snippets of two or three scenes to make the film more PG-13. But they added a little extra footage to a couple of other scenes, so all in all that is a minor complaint.
I won't add any more detail to what has already been said in the previous reviewer's comments. (I found them a little too revealing, and was glad I'd already watched my DVD before I read them.)
here they come
well first off, i'm a huge monkees, fan, and know most of the history behind the group. so that being said, daydream beleievers: the monkees story, is pretty good. there are some creative liberties taken, bert and bob become one person, don kirshner being involved from the very beginning. and the really cheesy (and i really hate this word) ending. i guess if the filmakers had more money, more detail would have been given. i would like to see a miniseries on them one day. but all the actors are very good, recreating the essense of davy, micky, peter, and mike. their are some good special features, video interviews with davy, micky, and peter. but the best thing is the audio commentaries by the guys themselves. micky's is hilarious, davy's is really insightful, and peter's is a bit odd, he hardly talks, but offers some cool insights also. but any monkee fan will want this dvd edition, just for these commentaries.
Daydream Believers: The Monkees Story
Okay Monkee Fans, this is a "must have". This is a chance for you to be a "fly on the wall" as the key moments in Monkee Lore take place. Nearly three years are compressed into this one entertaining and enlightening movie. The feature long commentaries by Davy, Peter and Mickey give you a glimpse at how each viewed these events in their own eyes at the time it happened. The individual interviews (alas... no Mike) are a great way to see how much the guys have changed, yet how much they are still the same lovable musicians we first adored.
I was thrilled as each one commented on how much they approved of the young man playing himself. They added individual insight, but pretty much let the film speak for the history of the group. The concert re-makes are fantastic. The re-makes of Davy's and Mike's screen tests prove just how dedicated these young men were to giving us "The Monkees". Amazing work!
My only regret is that Mike comes off as the bad guy and really doesn't get to defend himself or shed light on the story from his point of view. (His own chioce I'm sure).
You will thoroughly enjoy this and love that it is part of your collection. I do!
